No. 22 Camels down Houston Baptist 3-1

CU wins HBU Invitational

HOUSTON, TEXAS – No. 22 Campbell claimed the HBU Invitational Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist at AVEVA Stadium.

Daniel Hernandez, Jalen James and Adrian Morales scored, Kemy Amiche had an assists hat trick, and Tyler Young set up a pair of goals for the Camels (2-0-0), who outshot the Huskies 17-7 and only allowed one attempt on target.

Including Thursday's 3-0 victory over Incarnate Word, Campbell outscored its two opponents from Texas 6-1 and finished with a 41-11 advantage in shots.

The two victories produced six different goal scorers and the Camels never trailed in 180 minutes of action.

Young and Amiche set up Hernandez' strike in the 22nd minute, but HBU (0-1-1) equalized through D'Alessandro Herrera just over 10 minutes later.

However, James put the Camels back in front just 5:14 later off assists from Amiche and Young.

The Camels held a 13-2 edge in shots at the break.

Amiche provided the pass that led to Morales' 50th minute goal that rounded out the scoring.  HBU did not have a shot on target for the final 58:22 of play.  In fact, the Camels did not allow a shot on target in the second half of either of its first two outings.

"We're delighted to leave Texas with six points," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "We handled the adversity of travel, weather, playing two games in three days away from home.  Our guys faced a lot of challenges head-on and I'm proud of the effort tonight."

Amiche posted the second three-assist match of his career.  He also set up three goals in CU's win over Winthrop last November in the Big South semifinals.

The Camels improved to 15-0-1 all-time (2-0 this season) when Young – the preseason Big South offensive player of the year – has at least one goal or assist.  Keeper Sean Ellis allowed only one goal over 180 minutes in the first two starts of his Camel career.

Campbell returns to action Thursday (Sept. 1) in a 4:30 p.m. kickoff at Davidson.
