Campbell splits home doubleheader

BUIES CREEK – Campbell split the doubleheader on the second day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational. The Camels topped NCCU in straight sets in the first match before falling in three sets to The Citadel in the finale.

The Camels move to 4-8 on the year after Saturday's action.

Melody Paige and Emily Mitter were each named to the all-tournament team. Paige collected 30 kills on .490 hitting for the weekend, while Mitter dished out a team-high 63 assists.

Match One Recap
Campbell avenged its loss earlier in the week to NCCU with a straight-set win Saturday morning. The Camels hit .326 while holding the Eagles to .080.

Lailah Green led the attack again with 11 kills on .364 hitting. Gwen Wolkow added 10 and Chloe Cook had nine. Melody Paige continued her dominance at the net with six more blocks.

It took a comeback win for the Camels in the first set after trailing 19-13. Coming out of a timeout, Campbell closed on a 12-3 run to take the set. A handful of both kills and NCCU errors paved the way for CU to take a 1-0 lead.

It was all Camels the rest of the way, taking the first set 25-15 in a set that was never close. The Camels hit .423 in the frame with five blocks to go with it. Green collected five kills in the second without an error.

Campbell closed things out with a 25-16 third set, once again hitting .400 while holding NCCU to .033. It was a balanced attack with four different players notching three kills in the set.

Match Two Recap
The attack came back to earth in the second match, hitting just .135. The Camels had opportunities, but were unable to close out some sets.

Campbell dropped a close opening frame 25-23. Campbell led late at 21-20, but four straight Bulldog points allowed the visitors to take the early 1-0 advantage.

It was more of the same in the second set, tied at 20-20 before a late Citadel run pushed them to a 25-22 win. Campbell had no answer for tournament MVP Ali Ruffin in the frame as she collected 10 of her match-high 20 kills in the stanza.

The Citadel closed out the match with a 25-20 third set. This time Campbell's opportunity came from an early lead that was squandered to a 9-1 Bulldog run to take the lead for good and go on to lead by as many as seven.

Melody Paige led the Camels with 12 kills on .579 hitting for the match, while Claranne Fechter notched 20 digs on the other side of the ball.
