No. 21 Campbell hosts Coastal on Labor Day

Unbeaten Camels square off with old rival

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After earning three wins in a season-opening, 3-match road stretch, Campbell (3-0) hosts old rival Coastal Carolina (2-1) Monday in a 6:00 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT:  Campbell - Daniel Hernandez scored and set up Kemy Amiche's goal to lift shorthanded Campbell to a 2-0 win Thursday at Davidson.  The Camels played the final 85 minutes a man down after Diego Konincks was sent off... Coastal Carolina - After opening with wins over USC Upstate (4-1) and William & Mary (4-2), the Chanticleers dropped a 5-1 decision Friday at UNCG.  Maurice Hauser equalized in the 21st minute, but the Spartans scored four times in the second period.

CAMELS MOVE UP IN NATIONAL POLLS: After opening the season with two victories, Campbell moved up in the national polls.  CU is ranked No. 21 in this week's College Soccer News Top-30 and No. 22 in the Top Drawer Soccer Top-25.

CU AMONG COUNTRY'S TOP ATTACKS:  Through games of Sept. 1, Campbell ranked 22nd nationally in goals scored per game (2.67), 5th in goal differential (+7), and 17th in goals-against average (0.33).  Kemy Amiche is T3rd in the nation in assists (3) and along with Daniel Hernandez is T15th in goals (2).

AMICHE NAMED BIG SOUTH POTW; EARNS NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK HONORS:  After he figured in on four of Campbell's goals in a pair of wins, Kemy Amiche was named Big South Conference co-offensive player of the week Aug. 29.  He scored in a 3-0 win over UIW, then assisted on all three Camel goals in a 3-1 victory over HBU.  Amiche posted the second three-assist match of his career after setting up three goals in CU's win over Winthrop last November in the Big South semifinals.  Amiche was chosen for National Team of the Week by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.

COASTAL PREVIEW: Under the direction of 25th-year head coach Shaun Docking, the Chanticleers were picked 5th in the preseason Sun Belt Conference poll after finishing 2021 with a 6-5-4 record (3-1-4 Conference USA)... Alvaro Garcia-Pascual was named to the Sun Belt preseason all-conference team after leading the team with 14 points (6G, 2A) in 2021... Through 3 matches, Maurice Hauser leads Coastal in scoring (3-0-6), followed by Noe Santos (1-3-5). Joey Batrouni has played in all 3 matches and posted a 2.49 GAA.

SERIES HISTORY:  Monday's game is 28th all-time between the former Big South rivals.  Coastal leads the all-time series 16-10-1 and has won the last six contests since CU re-joined the Big South in 2011.  Coastal departed for the Sun Belt after the 2015-16 academic year.  The last three matches (in 2014 at Buies Creek, 2015 and 2019 at Conway) were all decided by one goal.

YOUNG POINTS = CAMPBELL POINTS:  Campbell stands 15-0-1 all time in matches when 2021 Big South offensive player of the year (and '22 preseason offensive POTW) Tyler Young has at least one point, including a 2-0-0 mark this season.  In addition to scoring the game-winner vs. UIW, he notched a pair of assists at HBU.  Young led the Big South in 2021 with 27 points (9G, 9A) and was an All-South region selection.

HOME, SWEET HOME: The Camels stand 27-2-4 in their last 32 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 10-1-1 mark in the 2021 season. CU finished 2019 with a 10-0-1 ledger at home, including two wins in the Big South Championship, outscored its opponents 34-3 in Buies Creek and did not trail in 11 matches.  Under 7th-year Coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 42-17-5 in Buies Creek.

IN FRONT: Campbell has not trailed in its first three matches - wins over Incarnate Word (3-0), Houston Baptist (3-1) and Davidson (2-0).

NEXT: Campbell travels to Old Dominion Friday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
