HAMPTON, VA. – Campbell opened the 2023 Virginia Duals with a 29-12 win over Kent State before falling to Oklahoma 22-9 on Friday at the Hampton Coliseum.
Anthony Molton posted wins over a pair of nationally ranked opponents at 125 pounds, while
Gabriel Hixenbaugh at 133 and
Levi Hopkins at 197 also added 2-0 days to lead the Camels.
In Friday's opener, Campbell (7-6) jumped out to a 14-0 lead after
Shannon Hanna's pin (4:10) at 141 pounds over Kent State's (0-3) Louis Newell. Hixenbaugh also notched a tech fall win over Brendon Fenton, 18-3 (7:00), while Molton registered his first ranked win of the day, defeating No. 14 Jake Ferri to lead things off at 125.
Kent State cut the CU lead to 17-12 after Michael Ferree's decision at 174, but the Camels closed out the match with decisions from No. 27
Caleb Hopkins at 184 and No. 12
Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight, while
Levi Hopkins pinned Blake Schaffer (6:04) at 197.
Molton added his second win of the day against the Sooners, topping No. 11 Joey Prata 9-8 in extra time. Hixenbaugh followed with a 2-0 victory over No. 30 Wyatt Henson before Oklahoma (4-2) reeled off six straight decisions.
Levi Hopkins added a 6-0 decision for the Camels, but No. 19 Josh Heindselman closed out the bout for the Sooners with a 17-5 major decision over
Chad Nix.
The Virginia Duals continue tomorrow with Campbell taking on Maryland at 1:00 p.m. before closing out competition against South Dakota State at 2:30 p.m.
Following this weekend's action, Campbell returns home to host the 2023 Chippewa Challenge on January 22. The Camels will entertain Central Michigan, CSU Bakersfield and American in the second year event.
