BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Winthrop's Sin'Cere McMahon scored 19 of his game high 23 in the second half to lead the Eagles to a 78-74 win over Campbell Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.
The Camels (7-11, 2-4) led by as many as 11 early and held a five-point advantage at the half, but went just 1-11 from beyond the arc in the second half, while Winthrop (8-11, 3-3) shot 7-14 from deep in the final 20 minutes to earn the win.
Ricky Clemons led the Camels with 18 points, thanks to getting to the foul line often and going 9-11 from the stripe.
Laurynas Vaistaras joined him in double figures with 13 along with a team-high seven rebounds. It was a balanced effort across the box score for Campbell, with
Juan Reyna scoring eight and five other Camels scoring seven.
Winthrop finished with four in double figures, led by McMahon's 23 and Toneari Lane scoring 16 on 4-7 from three.
After pushing the lead to 41-33 out of the break, Winthrop stormed back to take its first lead of the game at 48-46 following a Lane three pointer. The lead would change five more times before the Eagles went up 59-56 and never trailed again.
Winthrop led by six with 1:05 to play, but Campbell worked back to 77-74 and forcing a turnover to give Campbell and
Juan Reyna a shot to tie that fell short.
Campbell shot 51% for the game, its fifth highest mark of the year, but couldn't overcome Winthrop's 59.5% mark, the highest percentage allowed by Campbell this season.
Campbell returns to action again Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Radford. That game is set to be streamed on ESPN+.
