Clemons' buzzer-beater lifts Camels in OT

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ricky Clemons made a runner at the buzzer to lift Campbell over Charleston Southern 78-76 in overtime Saturday at the CSU Field House.

After Charleston Southern (7-12, 3-5) tied the score on Claudell Harris' two free throws with 37 seconds to play, Laurynas Vaistaras gave the Camels a second chance to win when he grabbed an offensive rebound off Devon Dunn's missed three and the Camels called timeout with 1.6 seconds to play.

With a sideline out of bounds play, Clemons broke up from the baseline, took the pass from Anthony Dell'Orso, dribbled once and his left-handed shot swished through the basket as the final horn sounded.

In a game of runs, Campbell (8-12, 3-5) recovered from a 12-point deficit early in the second half only to see the host Buccaneers force the extra period when Harris drove to the bucket with less than three seconds to play in the second half.

Campbell never trailed in the final period, but Harris, who scored all of CSU's points in OT, tied the game on three occasions.

Jay Pal, who had missed the last two games due to injury, led Campbell with 16 points and tied his career high with 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.  Dunn knocked down 5-of-8 threes and added 15 points off the bench, while Anthony Dell'Orso chipped in 13 points.  Clemons (4 assists) and Joshua Lusane chipped in nine points each for the Camels, who made four more free throws (18-of-25) than the Bucs attempted (8-14).

Harris led CSU with 22 points, while Taje' Kelly contributed 16, but only three after halftime.  RJ Johnson added 14 points for the Bucs.

Charleston Southern led 47-35 with 17:31 to play after Imajae Dodd scored through contact.  However, the Camels outscored the hosts 15-3 over the next 7:45 as Dunn and Jasin Sinani contributed six points apiece in the stretch and took a 53-52 lead on Dunn's triple with 9:45 to play.

CSU regained the lead thanks to a 12-3 flurry capped by Tahlik Chavez' triple with 6:50 remaining in the second half, but  the Bucs made only three buckets the rest of the period.  Dell'Orso made two from the line to give the Camels a 67-66 edge with 3:23 to play and ended an 11-2 run.

After Johnson scored in transition with 42 seconds left in the second half, Lusane answered on the other end when he grabbed a loose ball and laid it in with 27 seconds to play and give Campbell a 69-68 lead.  Harris missed a pullup 17-footer and Vaistaras grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made the second of two from the line with 8.2 seconds to go.  However, Harris forced OT on his move to the rim.

Charleston Southern shot 57 percent (16-28) from the floor in the opening half and took a 40-34 lead at the break.  Kelly tallied 13 first-half points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Harris added 12 for the Bucs, who trailed 27-21 before taking the lead with an 11-1 run.

Pal scored nine first-half points for the Camels, who shot 41 percent (12-29) in the first period, 5-of-13 beyond the arc (.385).

Campbell shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field, but matched its season-high with 10 threes (in 27 attempts) and finished with a 40-31 edge on the boards.  Charleston Southern shot 50.8 percent (30-59) overall and hit 8-of-22 treys (.364).
