BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell defeated Central Michigan 23-15 and CSU Bakersfield 32-8, while falling to American 19-18 in the 2023 Chippewa Challenge, hosted by the Camels on Sunday at the Pope Center / Gore Arena.

American (7-7) claimed its first Chippewa Challenge, going 3-0 on the day, while Campbell (10-8) posted a 2-1 performance and CSU Bakersfield (1-5) went 1-2. Central Michigan (3-8), meanwhile, finished 0-3.

The Eagles reeled off a trio of one point victories, topping the Chippewas 18-17 and Bakersfield 16-15 before edging the host Camels 19-18 in the finale.

Campbell defeated the Roadrunners 32-8 and CMU 23-15, while Bakersfield added a 21-16 win in the day's opener.

In CU's opener, the Camels closed out the Roadrunners with three straight bonus point victories, extending their 15-8 lead with a pin from No. 28 Caleb Hopkins at 184 (6:36) over Jacob Hansen, and a tech fall from No. 29 Levi Hopkins at 197, 17-2 (6:49) over Mateo Morales. No. 13 Taye Ghadiali finished the bout with a first period pin (1:22), topping Jake Andrews.

In its next appearance on the mat, Campbell jumped out to a 14-0 lead over the Chippewas with No. 25 Anthony Molton notching a first period pin over Sean Spidle at 125 pounds (1:12), and back to back major decisions from Gabriel Hixenbaugh, 16-5, and No. 32 Shannon Hanna, 22-13. CMU came back to take a 15-14 lead with four straight victories, including a 16-1 tech fall for No. 31 Alex Cramer at 174 pounds, but CU again locked up the final three weight classes, including decisive third period takedowns from Caleb Hopkins at 184 and Ghadiali at heavyweight, to secure the 23-15 dual win.

In the final match of the day, No. 32 Maximilian Leete's pin at 125 gave AU the early 6-0 lead before decisions from No. 29 Domenic Zaccone, 9-3, at 133 pounds, Hanna, 8-6, at 141, and Chris Rivera, 4-3, at 149. A 3-1 extra time win from American's Patrick Ryan at 157 pounds, followed by Caleb Campos' 13-1 major decision and Lucas White's pin (2:04), however, gave the Eagles a 19-9 advantage with three weight classes remaining. CU's upper weights once again swept, 3-0, finishing with Ghadiali's 11-8 decision at heavyweight, but came up just a point short in the team scoring, 19-18.

Both Caleb and Levi Hopkins, along with Ghadiali and Hanna went 3-0 on the day, while Zaccone and Hixenbaugh combined for a CU sweep at 133 pounds for the Camels.

Next up, the Camels will return to their SoCon slate, hosting Presbyterian and Davidson on January 28 in the team's 2023 home finale.
