BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Laurynas Vaistaras scored a career-high 13 points and Campbell never trailed Wednesday in a 63-58 win over Gardner-Webb at Gore Arena.
In his first career start, the junior from Lithuania made 6-of-10 from the floor as the Camels (6-9, 1-2 Big South) ended a four-game losing streak.
Joshua Lusane added nine points, while
Ricky Clemons (eight rebounds, six assists) and
Anthony Dell'Orso chipped in eight points apiece for Campbell, which made 14 more free throws (15-23) than Gardner-Webb (4-11) attempted.
Quest Aldridge came off the bench to lead GWU (7-8, 2-1) with 20 points, including 5-of-9 threes, in 23 minutes. Anthony Selden added 13 and DQ Nicholas 10 for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who had won their last five games.
Campbell led 32-27 at the break and by 10 (41-31) when Clemons scored at the rim with 13:39 to go. Aldridge made the first of two free throws to bring Gardner-Webb within 49-45 with 6:02 remaining, but Lusane hit a three on the next possession and the visitors never drew closer.
The Camels shot 42.6 percent (20-47) on the night, made 8-of-24 (.333) threes, and finished with a 36-32 edge on the boards against a team that entered leading the Big South in rebound margin (+6.5). GWU finished 24-56 (.429) from the floor, 6-of-21 (.286) from 3-point distance but hit only 36 percent of its free throws.
The Camels did not trail in the opening 20 minutes, led by as many as nine and took a 32-27 lead into the dressing room. All nine CU players that saw action in the first half scored, led by
Juan Reyna, who had seven points off the bench.
Juan Reyna scored seven points off the bench and Campbell shot 43 percent in the opening half, made 4-of-12 threes, and 10-of-15 from the line. Aldridge led GWU with nine first-half points on 3-of-5 beyond the arc. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot just 38 percent from the floor before the break and missed four of five free throws.
The Camels hit the road for games Saturday at UNC Asheville (2:00 p.m.) and Jan. 11 at USC Upstate (7:00).
