Asheville rallies for 58-55 win

Clemons leads Camels with 21 points

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Drew Pember scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead UNC Asheville to a 58-55 win over Campbell Saturday at Kimmel Arena.
 
The Bulldogs (11-6, 3-1) trailed 37-19 after Jay Pal canned a three with 17:46 to play and gave the Camels (6-10, 1-3) their largest lead.  Asheville, however, got back in the game with a 21-5 run, then won the game from the foul line.
 
Pember's dunk tied the game at 46-46 with 4:12 to go, then Asheville scored its final 12 points from the line.
 
Ricky Clemons scored 21 points, including two on a backdoor cut with 2:00 remaining that gave the Camels a 52-49 lead.  However, CU converted just once more from the field – Clemons' drive to the rim with 10.6 seconds to play.
 
The preseason Big South player of the year, Pember finished 5-of-14 from the floor, but made 11-of-12 from the stripe – including his last 10 free throws.  He added 10 rebounds and blocked five shots.  Tajion Jones contributed 12 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who shot 56 percent in the second half and sank 19-of-23 (.826) from the line in the final 20 minutes.
 
Clemons finished 6-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 beyond the arc, made 7-of-10 free throws, while dealing three assists and making two steals. Jay Pal added 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Camels, who shot 36 percent (20-55) overall, made 6-of-15 threes (.400) and 9-of-12 from the line.
 
After making just 28 percent of its shots in the opening half, Asheville finished 16-of-41 (.390) overall from the field, 6-of-16 (.375) from 3-point distance, but made eight more free throws (20-27) than the Camels attempted.
 
Campbell closed the first half on a 13-0 run and took a 34-19 lead at the break.  Clemons didn't miss from the field in the opening half (3-of-3, 2-of-2 threes) and led CU with 11 points. Pal and Joshua Lusane added nine each before the break.
 
Asheville entered the game leading the Big South in team field goal percentage (.485) but made just 28 percent (7-of-25) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.  The Bulldogs did not score for the final 5:31 of the first stanza.
 
The Camels return to action Wednesday (Jan. 11) at USC Upstate (7:00 p.m.).
