Wilmington, N.C. – Campbell handed UNCW its first CAA loss of the season with a four-set win Sunday afternoon in Hanover Hall. The win earns Campbell a weekend split after yesterday's five set loss.
The win moves Campbell to 7-9, 4-2 in the CAA, while UNCW drops to 8-8, 5-1.
Gwen Wolkow had a monster day, leading the Camels in kills (15) and digs (19).
Chloe Cook and
Melody Paige were just behind with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Claranne Fechter amassed 18 digs as well.
Six of the nine sets on the weekend were decided by just two points, and eight of the nine were decided by three or less.
Set one felt like a continuation of yesterday's match, going beyond 25 and saw Campbell take the opening frame 29-27. That marked five out of six sets on the weekend at that point decided by the minimum two points. Also in similar fashion to Saturday, the Camels trailed late but held off three set points with a late run to climb back into it before a
Chloe Cook kill gave the Camels the early 1-0 advantage.
Campbell was the first team to have any breathing room this weekend to run away with the second set 25-14. An early 11-1 run gave the Camels plenty of cushion to cruise to a two-set lead. The Camels hit .542 in the second, while holding UNCW to .079.
UNCW fought back to take the third set 29-27. The Camels had three set points and opportunities to close it out in straight sets but couldn't seal the deal. Campbell did hold off two of from UNCW, but couldn't stave off a third.
Campbell capitalized on a late run in the fourth to escape with a four-set win and split the weekend. The fourth set felt the same as all the previous when it was tied at 21-21, but the Camels closed things out with a 4-1 burst at the end for the win.
The Camels next action is another road test as they head to Baltimore to face preseason favorite Towson. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Saturday.
