Camels and Seahawks tie, 0-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell and UNCW played to a 0-0 draw on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletics Complex, as the team celebrated Campbell superfan Gabby Hernandez in the Gabby's Angels Game.

The Camels now sit at 2-5-5 and 0-3-4 in CAA play, while the Seahawks are at 3-6-2 (2-2-2).

The teams played evenly throughout most of the match. UNCW had a 10-8 shot advantage, although each team put two shots on goal.

Campbell goalkeeper JLo Varada recorded a diving save in the 55th minute to prevent UNCW's best chance of the night. Her two saves on the day puts her at 39 for the season, and the match was also her second complete-game shutout.

The Fighting Camels had their best chance of the day late, as Emely Rubio found some space inside the box in the 89th minute. The defender came over just in time to block her attempt and keep the game scoreless.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Jeff Gross

On the team's overall performance:

"The other day, our broadcaster asked if I had seen our team put together a full 90-minute match, and I told him if you ever play a full 90-minute match you're probably not playing good enough teams. Today, we put together the majority of the game. We did everything we've worked on all week, and I'm proud of what we were able to do. However, we still have a lot to build on, and we still have to go through this fight to get in the playoffs."

On the performance of JLo Varada:

"She just needs more games to get more experience. Just like the field players who haven't played a lot of college soccer, you just need more games. She's starting to get more confidence and play the game how she likes to play the game. She's becoming more well-rounded."

On what the teams needs to do to turn chances into goals:

"I think we need to create just a few more. But what we did today was enough to win the game. When you get close to the goal it's about decision-making, and it's difficult when you haven't been in front of goal a lot. Once you start getting in there, you start figuring out what's the best way to go about it.
