Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Camels defeat Dragons 3-2, earn first conference win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Freshman forward Alyssa Tucker scored two goals in the second half, and the Campbell women's soccer team earned a come-from-behind victory against Drexel, 3-2, for their first conference win Thursday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

The win earns the Camels (3-5-5, 1-3-4 CAA) three crucial points as they fight to earn a spot in CAA postseason play.

Drexel (5-7-2, 1-5-2) began the game with a goal only 24 seconds into the match. After the Camels turned it over, Perrotto and Boyd teamed up to find Casey Touey who chipped it over the keeper.

Campbell would equalize in the 13th minute, as Olivia Neal carried the ball up the right side before coming in towards the middle. Her through ball found Kaleigh Backlund at the left post, who was able to curl it past the goalkeeper.

The Dragons took the lead again in the 25th minute, as a collision of two Camels created an opportunity for Isabel Kuzy. She passed it into the net to give Drexel a one-goal advantage at halftime.

The run-of-play would be back-and-forth for much of the second half. Campbell earned a free kick in the 81st minute near midfield, and Riley Terrill delivered a ball into the box. Tucker found herself on the end of it to tie the game.

The Camels would continue to press, earning themselves a corner kick in the 88th minute. After a half-clearance from the Dragons, the ball found its way to Lauren Koczenasz on the right side as she crossed it into the box. Tucker was at the near post, and headed the ball across goal, finding the back corner empty. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

QUOTABLE

Forward Alyssa Tucker

On how the team was able to come back from being down:

"I think this team has learned this season that we have to keep fighting. This is a tough conference, and we just have to keep fighting each game."

Head Coach Jeff Gross

On the team's fight to come from behind and earn the win:

"All credit to the players. They have to show up every day, they have to schedule, practice, travel, and then they come out and play games with a ton of heart and toughness to win in this league. Today I think we demonstrated that we have more in us than we have had to this point. Most of this comes down to gaining experience. We have more players who have gained more experience playing against these types of teams. Drexel is a good team, and so were we tonight."

On the team's performance after falling behind early:

"Games always start 0-0, and if somebody scores there's always a chance to respond. Our players have been in these crucial games before, so they know how to play through tough times. We've had a couple of games this year where things didn't quite go our way early and we found our way out of it…We just need to let the players play it out."

On taking this momentum into Sunday's match:

"We're just going to focus on recovery and regenerating and get our game plan ready for Sunday. The players are the ones that have to play the game, and they will show you their desire. We'll see how our team responds against a Delaware team that is making their way. They've been very competitive every match. We're expecting another good CAA match."
