BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels completed the weekend sweep of College of Charleston with another 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon. The Camels didn't drop a set on the weekend, to earn back-to-back straight set wins for the first time this season.
The win brings Campbell to .500 for the first time this year at 10-10, 7-3 in the CAA. Charleston drops to 7-14, 4-6 in the league.
It was another efficient day for the Camels who it .304 on the afternoon. Following yesterday's .374 performance, CU posted two of its top three most efficient outings against the Cougars this weekend. Today's effort was led by
Chloe Cook's 12 kills with just one error, and
Abbie Tuyo adding 11.
Melody Paige and
Gwen Wolkow both finished with eight each.
Claranne Fechter came away with a match high 18 digs, while the setting duo of Sciacca and Converse split the load evenly with 17 assists each.
Trailing by one point in the first set at 14-13, the Camels hit the jets for a 9-0 spurt to pull ahead comfortably and eventually a 25-16 set win. Campbell hit .400 in the opening frame thanks to six early kills from Tuyo.
The second set turned out to be the closest of the day with Campbell pulling it out 25-23. The Camels seemed to be rolling with a 20-15 lead, but C of C stormed back and drew even at 23-23. A Cougar attack error set up an ace from
Maddie Converse to close out the second.
The Campbell defense stepped up in the third set and held the Cougars to .062 hitting while the CU offense found space for 15 kills in the final frame. Cook finished off her day with four kills in the third set to lead the attack and help CU take it 25-20.
The Camels are back home next Saturday against Northeastern for Campbell Homecoming Weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday's matches begin at 1 p.m.
