Greenville, N.C. –
Anthony Dell'Orso poured in a career-high 35, but it wasn't enough for the Camels as they fell to East Carolina 77-63 Saturday afternoon.
Campbell drops to 1-1 on the year, while ECU improves to 2-0.
The Australian scored 22 of his game-high 35 in the second half and went 10-11 at the foul line on the day, shooting the same number of FT himself as ECU for the game. Dell'Orso is the first Camel to put up 35 in an outing since Chris Clemons went for 48 at Hampton on Feb. 23, 2019.
Campbell struggled to get the offense moving in the first, relying on trips to the foul line for a large chunk of scoring, going 11-15 from the stripe. Dell'Orso had a hot start from the floor, with nine points coming before the first media timeout and had 13 by the halftime break.
Turnovers plagued Campbell in the first 20, coughing the ball up 12 times leading to 20 points off turnovers for the Pirates who built a 39-26 halftime lead. RJ Felton led all scorers with 16 at halftime.
ECU opened the second half by knocking down three quick three-pointers to stretch the lead to as many as 25. The Pirate offense was led by Felton, who did his best to go shot-for-shot with Dell'Orso and turned in 30. Ezra Ausar and Brandon Johnson each reached double figures as well.
Dell'Orso shot 7-13 in the second half with a pair of triples to try and keep the Camels in the contest, along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Laurynas Vaistaras added nine points for the day as Campbell's next closest scorer.
Campbell eventually worked that 25-point deficit down to just 11, but it was too little too late.
The Camels finished shooting 46% from the floor, and 75% at the foul line going 21-28 as a team. ECU shot 47%, but knocked down nine three-pointers to Campbell's two.
Campbell will look to regroup ahead of next Wednesday's game at Virginia Tech, with tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. That game will be streamed on ACCNX.
