BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell outscored Western Carolina 23-3 in the first quarter and never looked back in a 70-52 win Saturday afternoon on Wanda Watkins Court at Gore Arena.
The afternoon opened with a special ceremony as the court inside Gore Arena was officially dedicated to longtime coach and administrator, Wanda Watkins. A career that spanned 48-plus years between time as a student-athlete, head coach and administrator, Watkins announced in September that she would retire in May 2024.
Brittany Staves scored 11 of her 13 points in the first quarter as Campbell (3-1) finished the opening period on a 20-0 run. Western Carolina (2-3) made just 1-of-9 field goals to start the game.
Audrey Fuller led all scorers with 14 points off the bench, making 4-of-6 shots from three and contributing four rebounds and two steals. Christabel Ezumah provided a double-double for the second-straight game with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists.
The Camels, which led by as many as 25, shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from three. It marks the third game this season the Camels have shot 40 percent or better from behind the arc.
Campbell held a 48-26 advantage on the boards and outscored the Catamounts 11-2 in second chance points.
Zanoria Cruz led Western Carolina with 13 points while Tyja Beans added 10 points and seven boards.
Campbell heads to Puerto Rico over the Thanksgiving break for the San Juan Shootout featuring games against Morgan State and Western Michigan, Nov. 23 & 24.
