Camels take on Morgan State and Western Michigan in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Campbell heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Clasico featuring games against Morgan State and Western Michigan, Thursday and Friday. 

Campbell takes on Morgan State on Thanksgiving at 4:00 PM (EST) and Western Michigan on Friday at 6:30 PM.

The games will be broadcast via the tournament organizers, available to purchase for $12.99. Links to watch are available on our schedule page. Live stats will also be available for fans to keep up with the action.

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past seven seasons. UConn is the next closest program to accomplish the feat, having done so in six of the past seven.
  • The Camels finished the 2022-23 season ranked No. 5 nationally in scoring defense, holding foes to an average of 52.5 points per game
  • The Camels also ranked No. 8 in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to shoot 35.1 percent from the field and No. 60 in three-point  field goal percentage defense, limiting teams to shoot 28.6 percent from behind the arc
  • Additionally, the Camels ranked No. 52 nationally with 39.7 rebounds per game, No. 12 with a rebound margin of 8.4 and No. 51 averaging 4.1 blocks per game
  • Campbell has held 39 opponents to 40 points or less and 94 opponents to 50 points or less in the Ronny Fisher era

LAST TIME OUT

  • Campbell jumped out to a 23-3 lead after the first quarter and defeated Western Carolina 70-52 last Saturday
  • Brittany Staves scored 11 of her 13 points in the first quarter as Campbell finished the opening period on a 20-0 run, limiting the Catamounts to just one made field goal in the first quarter
  • Audrey Fuller led all scorers with 14 points off the bench, making 4-of-6 shots from three and contributing four rebounds and two steals. Christabel Ezumah provided a double-double for the second-straight game with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists
  • The Camels, which led by as many as 25, shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from three. It marks the third game this season the Camels have shot 40 percent or better from behind the arc

SERIES HISTORIES

  • Third all-time meeting against Morgan State in a series the Camels lead 2-0. Both teams last met in 2016 at the Puerto Rico Clasico in Coach Fisher's first season at Campbell. The Camels pulled out a 62-51 win behind four double-figure scorers led by Summer Price's 15 points.
  • Second ever meeting against Western Michigan. The Broncos won the first matchup 84-68 on Dec. 30, 1999 at the Georgia Tech Holiday Invite

SCOUTING THE BEARS AND BRONCOS

  • Morgan State (2-2) is coming off a 62-48 loss to Davidson and only has wins against non-D1 schools Washington Adventist (59-57) and Notre Dame of Maryland (75-32)
  • Sophomore forward Kaia Ponder leads the Bears averaging 11.3 points along with 5.0 boards and 2.3 blocks. Sophomore guard Gabrielle Johnson is averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 2.8 steals and 2.5 assists
  • Morgan State was picked to finish third in the MEAC preseason poll and are led by Ed Davis in his eighth season
  • Western Michigan (1-2) picked up its first win of the season as it enters the Puerto Rico Clasico after defeating Youngstown State 54-52
  • Graduate guard Kaitlyn Zarycki leads the Broncos averaging 13.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals
  • Western Michigan was picked to finish 10th out of 12 teams in the MAC Preseason Poll. The Broncos are led by Shane Clipfell in his 12th season at the helm

SHOOTERS SHOOT

  • Campbell has opened the season as one of the top shooting teams in the country
  • The Fighting Camels lead the CAA shooting 45.8 from the field and rank 15th in the country in threes per game (9.8)
  • Campbell has shot 40 percent or better from behind the arc in three of its first four games to open the season
  • Four Camels are shooting over 40 percent from range led by Brittany Staves who has made 55 percent (11-of-20) shots from three

EZUMAH EFFICIENCY

  • Senior forward Christabel Ezumah is off to an efficient start to the season for the Camels
  • Despite playing the fifth-most minutes per game (21.8), Ezumah leads Campbell in scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg) and is shooting 65.6 percent (21-of-32) from the field
  • Ezumah has recorded double-doubles in back-to-back games against Virginia and Western Carolina and has scored in double-figures in every game this season

WANDA WATKINS COURT

  • Campbell dedicated its home court at Gore Arena to legendary student-athlete, coach and administrator Wanda Watkins is who set to retire from Campbell Athletics effective at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.
  • A fixture in the Fighting Camel Athletics program for the last four decades, Watkins currently serves as Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator.  After a 37-year coaching career, she moved into athletics administration at her alma mater in September 2016
  • For 35 seasons, Watkins served as head coach of the Campbell women's basketball team before moving to an administrative position in June of 2016.  While in charge of the Camels on the court, Watkins led her teams to 549 victories, 10 appearances in Division I conference championship games and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament

CAMELS IN THE CAA

  • The 2023-24 season marks the first for Campbell as members of the Coastal Athletic Association after departing for the league this past summer from the Big South
  • Full CAA membership includes College of Charleston, Delaware, Drexel, Elon, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Stony Brook, Towson and William & Mary
  • Monmouth won the CAA Championship last season to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament
  • Towson and Drexel both earned bids to the WNIT

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball
  • Over the previous six seasons Campbell has won 119 games for an average of 19 wins per season
  • Before leaving the Big South for the CAA, Fisher was the longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season and led all active coaches in the league with 232 wins overall including 146 in Big South play before the 2023-24 season
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
  • Previously served as head coach at Presbyterian (2008-16)
