Camels open season with win over Navy

BUIES CREEK – Campbell opened the season with a 59-48 win over Navy Monday night at Gore Arena. The win gives Campbell 18 straight home-opening wins, including every home opener since Gore Arena opened in 2008.

Gediminas Mokseckas led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Anthony Dell'Orso with 14. Mason Grant also turned in a career-high 11 points, including a pair of alley oop finishes.

The Camels held the Midshipmen to 33% shooting without a scorer in double figures. Navy had scoring droughts of both seven and five minutes during the game as they shot only 18% from distance.

Mokseckas opened the 2023-24 season with a dunk for the first points before Grant threw down a lob two plays later and the Camels were off and running, never trailing in the contest. Campbell had 18 points in the paint in the first half to lead 32-18 at the break.

Shortly after the Midshipmen cut the lead to 10 early  in the second half Campbell pieced together a 9-0 run capped by another lob to Grant to push the lead to 20, Campbell's largest of the game, with eight minutes to play. That 50-30 lead was enough for Campbell to reach the final buzzer with a comfortable 59-48 win.

Eleven different Camels saw the court tonight, including four new faces. Tasos Cook had six points in his Campbell debut, and Alex Kotov had four.

The win was Campbell's first over Navy, following only two losses in 1983 and 1984.

Campbell now hits the road for a pair of games, starting Saturday at ECU. Tip-off in Greenville is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
