BALTIMORE, Md. - Brittany Staves scored a career-high 25 points and Campbell held Coppin State to four points in the fourth quarter to win 68-55 Thursday night at PEC Arena.
Christabel Ezumah scored 11 points while Gemma Nunez added nine for the Fighting Camels who improve to 2-0 on the season.
Faith Blackstone led Coppin State (0-2) with 18 while Angel Jones added 15.
After Blackstone's jumper with 7:28 left in the second quarter gave the Eagles a 26-25 lead, Campbell answered with a 10-0 run which included an and-one bucket from Nunez. Staves, who scored 17 of her 25 in the first half, gave the Camels a 44-34 lead at the intermission after knocking down her third three of the half.
After being outscored 17-9 in third quarter, Campbell buckled down defensively and limited the Eagles to four points on 2-of-16 shooting in the final period. Staves provided two more three-pointers in the fourth quarter to finish a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc.
A graduate student from Raleigh, N.C., Staves finished 9-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe in 33 minutes.
Campbell shot 53.2 percent (25-of-47) from the field, 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from three and converted 83.3 percent (10-of-12) of its free throws. Coppin State finished shooting 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor, 14.8 percent (4-of-27) from three and made 77.8 percent (7-9) of its free throws.
Shy Tuelle grabbed a game-high eight boards while Ezumah added six and Nunez five for the Camels who out-rebounded the Eagles 35-29 on the night.
Campbell continues on the road Sunday at Virginia. Tip-off from John Paul Jones Arena is set for 2:00 PM and will air on ACCNX.
