BUIES CREEK – The Campbell pitching staff stifled the Rutgers offense with a two-hit shutout to secure the series with a 10-0 win Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Rutgers led the nation in scoring in 2022 at 9.6 runs per game, and were shut out only once a year ago. The two hits allowed were the fewest against Rutgers since May 29, 2021.
Meanwhile, the Campbell offense continued its hot start to the season, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits, with five of those going for extra bases.
Campbell improved to 2-0 on the year, while Rutgers drops to 0-2.
Chance Daquila earned the win in his Campbell debut, tossing five scoreless allowing only one hit. The Catawba Valley transfer did find himself in trouble in the fourth with the bases loaded and nobody out, but a strikeout and groundout helped him escape the jam.
Daquila finished with a final line of 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K.
Ty Cummings replaced Daquila on the bump and pitched a lights-out three innings, allowing only one baserunner while striking out two.
George Ferguson then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close the door.
The Camels struck again in the opening frame after a Belbin single and a handful of Scarlet Knights miscues pushed him around. Belbin helped add a run the following inning with an RBI single. Belbin had a big day at the dish, going 4-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Halstead added a pair with a two-run blast to right in the sixth. The senior is now 5-8 with four RBI to start his season.
Grant Knipp added some additional insurance with a mammoth two-run homer in the eighth. The rocket carried 413 to left, and left the bat at 109 mph, part of his 3-5 day at the plate.
Drake Pierson followed with an RBI double later in the inning to round out the scoring.
Campbell will go for the sweep in the series finale tomorrow at noon. That game will be streamed on ESPN+.
