BOONE, N.C. – No. 20 Appalachian State outlasted an upper weights surge from visiting Campbell, claiming Sunday's Southern Conference showdown 22-14 at Varsity Gym.

App State moved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in conference matches while Campbell fell to 16-9 and 7-1 in league duals after the matchup of teams on top of the SoCon standings.

The loss ended a six match dual win streak for the Camels, who matched a school single season record with seven SoCon wins (2020, 2021).

The day started with a pair of tightly contested bouts at 125 and 133 pounds, with No. 14 Caleb Smith topping No. 32 Anthony Molton 4-1 and Ethan Oakley edging No. 22 Domenic Zaccone 3-1 in overtime for App State.

After No. 33 Shannon Hanna put Campbell on the board at 133 pounds, downing Heath Gonyer in an 11-3 major decision with a late takedown and back points, the Mountaineers reeled off four straight major decisions, taking a 22-4 lead.

Campbell's upper weights closed the gap with decisions for No. 31 Caleb Hopkins at 184, 5-1 over Lucas Uliano, and No. 27 Levi Hopkins at 197, 5-0 over Carson Floyd, as well as a 17-8 major decision for No. 16 Taye Ghadiali over Jacob Sartorio, but needing pins at all three weight classes to capture the road win, App State took the dual, 22-14.

The 20^th-ranked Mountaineers marked CU's seventh nationally ranked opponent this season.

The Mountaineers are also set take on Presbyterian and Davidson following the dual, seeking to repeat its SoCon dual title.

Three Campbell wrestlers completed undefeated SoCon regular seasons with victories on Sunday, including Hanna at 133 (8-0), Levi Hopkins at 197 (8-0) and Ghadiali (7-0).

Next up, CU will return to Boone, N.C. for the 2023 SoCon Championships on March 4. The 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place March 16-18 at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
