Winthrop outlasts Camels 95-93 in OT

Clemons scores career-high 34 points

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Kasen Harrison and Sin'Cere McMahon combined for 46 points and Winthrop held off Campbell 95-93 in overtime Wednesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum.

Ricky Clemons scored a career-high 34 points – including a 35-foot three in the final second of regulation to force OT – and Anthony Dell'Orso added 23 for the Camels (13-16, 8-9), who rallied from a 9-point deficit with 7:20 left in the second half.  Jay Pal chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Gediminas Mokseckas had 10 points for the Camels, who shot 60 percent from the field, but made four fewer threes and six fewer free throws than the hosts.

Harrison tallied 24 points and McMahon finished with 22 – including a 4-point play with 3.4 seconds to play in regulation.  Kelton Talford added 19 points and 12 rebounds and Toneari Lane 11 points for Winthrop (14-16, 9-8), which clinched a first-round bye in next week's Big South tournament at Charlotte.

In a game that included 19 lead changes and 12 ties, Winthrop made 9-of-11 free throws in OT, 26-of-31 overall.  After giving the Camels an 89-88 lead on a 3-point play with 1:53 to go, Clemons was called for a charge with 21.8 seconds left and Cu trailing by one.  Harrison and McMahon wrapped four made free throws about Mason Grant's lay-in to give the Eagles a 94-91 edge with 9.6 seconds left.

Dell'Orso's wing three in the waning seconds hit the front iron and Clemons laid in the follow shot to cut the gap to one.  Lane then hit the first of two from the line with 0.1 seconds to go for the final margin.

Campbell finished the night 29-of-58 (.600) from the floor, hit a season-high 11 threes (in 25 attempts) and 20-of-26 free throws, while out-rebounding Winthrop 35-22.  Winthrop, however, made as many foul shots (26-of-31) as CU attempted and finished 11-of-25 (.444) beyond the arc while shooting 50 percent overall.

Clemons, who eclipsed his previous career high of 22 points set last November against Stetson, finished 11-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and 10-of-11 from the stripe, while adding 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals with just 2 turnovers in 41 minutes.  Dell'Orso was 9-of-14 from the floor and grabbed seven boards.

Clemons' career night marked the first time a CU player passed the 30-point barrier in a game since All-American Chris Clemons (no relation) scored 48 points on Feb. 3, 2019 against Hampton at Gore Arena.

Campbell shot 64 percent from the floor in the opening half and took a 35-31 lead at the break.  The Camels used a 16-3 run midway through the period to build the lead to 31-20 on Mokseckas' free throws with 5:44 to play.  However, Winthrop trimmed the gap thanks to a 9-0 burst before Mokseckas' bucket at the buzzer.

The Camels close out the regular season Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip at Radford.  The Big South Championship begins Mar. 1 at Bojangles' Arena in Charlotte.
