CONWAY, S.C. – No. 19 Campbell fell in a 9-0 hole early and could never quite make it all the way back in a 12-9 loss to Coastal Carolina Tuesday afternoon.
Campbell dropped its first midweek of the year to fall to 12-3, while Coastal improves to 10-5 for the season.
Coastal did the bulk of its damage with a nine-run third inning against
Hunter Loyd, four of those scoring unearned. Eight of the nine runs were scored via three home runs, with Zack Beach going deep twice in the frame.
The Camels started chipping away immediately, getting four runs back in the fourth, thanks in part to back-to-back home runs from
Bryce Arnold and
Lawson Harrill. That was Campbell's third set of back-to-back home runs in the last six days.
Campbell then scored five in the fifth with
Tyler Halstead and Arnold each going deep. Arnold's fifth inning shot was his team-high seventh of the year.
Jarrod Belbin also drove in a pair with a bases loaded single in the inning to cut the deficit to 10-9.
That was as close as Campbell would get, leaving 13 on base during the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh. Meanwhile, Coastal cashed in most of its chances and left only two on base.
Belbin tallied three hits with three other Camels adding two. Belbin and Arnold each drove in a team-high three runs.
Ty Cummings relieved Loyd in the third and allowed three runs in 1.1 innings.
Aaron Rund pitched the last four innings scoreless. Both relievers were the beneficiaries of double plays, with the Campbell infield turning a season-high four.
No. 19 Campbell returns home for the first time since Feb. 26 for the Big South opener against Winthrop Friday Mar. 17 at 6 p.m. Friday night will be the first of four Friday Night Fireworks nights at Jim Perry Stadium following the game.
