Camels open Big South play with win

BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels opened their final Big South slate with a 12-2 win over Winthrop on a rainy Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The win helps Campbell to 13-3, 1-0 on the year, while Winthrop dips below .500 to 9-10, 1-0 in the league.

Cade Kuehler set the tone from the get-go, striking out the side in order in the first. The junior posted a line of 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K. Kuehler earned the win to improve to 4-0, and has now allowed just three earned runs or less in four of his five starts on the season.

The offense got started early for Campbell, scoring in each of the first three innings. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Trenton Harris but Campbell ahead for good with a two run home run, his first of the season.

The Camels found some breathing room with a four-run fifth with a pair of two-run. Singles from Lawson Harrill and Logan Jordan.

The game was officially broken open with a three-runs seventh that showcased Campbell's "hard to kill" mantra. Runs crossed that inning on a a double steal, a forced throwing error, and a solo home run from Tyler Halstead.

A trio of Campbell relievers, Ernie Day, Jackson Roberts, and Wiley Hartley, all pitched one scoreless inning to polish off the win.

Harrill and Jordan led the way at the dish, each with two hits and three RBI. Harrill's two hits on the night brings his season batting average up to .460. The nation's OBP leaders continued to find ways on base, working 10 walks and getting hit by three pitches.

Campbell will look to take the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. Chance Daquila is expected to get the start. Saturday's game will air on ESPN+.
