No. 14 Campbell opens series with 13-1 win

FARMVILLE, VA. – A couple big innings helped No. 14 Campbell top Longwood 13-1 in the series opener Friday night. The Camels scored four runs in three different innings to give Kuehler plenty of support to earn his seventh win of the season.

Campbell improves to 26-7, 12-1 in the Big South, while Longwood falls to 14-23, 4-9 in the league. The Camels have now won 20 straight series openers, adding to the longest streak in the nation.

It took just two pitches for Campbell to take a 2-0 lead, after a Payton Howard leadoff single set up Jarrod Belbin's 11th home run of the year. Lawson Harrill added to it with a two-run shot of his own, his 10th of the season later in the frame to put Campbell up 4-0 in the first. Harrill is the fourth Camel to notch double digit home runs this season.

With two out and nobody on in the third, the Camels strung together four singles and two walks to post another four-spot in the third inning and take an 8-0 lead. Grant Knipp provided the biggest hit of the frame with his two-run single.

Three more hits and an error helped Campbell post its third four-run inning of the day in the sixth. Doubles from Arnold and Riley were the catalysts for the big inning that saw thee Camels go ahead 12-0.

Belbin connected for his second home run of the day in the seventh by driving one over the scoreboard in right field. Belbin is now just one shy of Arnold for the team high.

Meanwhile, Kuehler continued his hot streak on the mound striking out eight more and allowing only one run. Across his last three starts, Kuehler has struck out 29, walked just four, and allowed only two runs.

After allowing his first two batters of the game to reach, Kuehler settled in to retire the next 12 batters he faced. A single broke up the streak, but he followed that with three straight strikeouts in the fifth, ultimately retiring 15 of 16 batters from the first through fifth innings.

He finished with a final line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K.

Brendan Wright, Trent Adams, and Peyton Brown each worked a scoreless inning on the hill to finish the game.

Lawson Harrill had a three-hit day at the dish, along with Howard, Belbin and Riley all logging multi-hit games as well.

The Camels and Lancers return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. for game two of the series. Chance Daquila is expected to take the mound for Campbell.
