No. 11 Campbell tops HPU 18-5

BUIES CREEK – No. 11 Campbell found plenty of late offense for the second night in a row to top High Point 18-5 and take the series. The Camels didn't get on the board until the fifth, and broke the game open with nine runs in the eighth to put the Panthers away.

Campbell earned its 30th win of the season and moves to 30-8, 15-2 in the Big South while HPU drops to 12-26, 6-11 in the league. In the fifth inning and later of the first two games of the series, Campbell is outscoring HPU 32-5.

Cade Boxrucker was called on for some early relief and was up to the task. With the bases loaded already down 2-0 in the third, Boxrucker picked up the strikeout to limit the damge and was just getting started.  The junior went on to strike out a career-high 11 across 4.1 innings of work.

Boxrucker kept High Point off the board long enough for the offense to come to life, starting with a two-run blast from Logan Jordan to put the Camels on the board in the fifth to tie it. The Camels took the lead on a groundout later in the frame to go up for good at 3-2.

The Camels took advantage of HPU miscues all night, starting with two runs scoring in the sixth on a sac bunt attempt. Of Campbell's 18 runs on the night, only six were earned, taking advantage of four HPU errors.

The unearned runs stacked up in the eighth after a pair of misplayed grounders led to all nine runs scoring in the frame being unearned. Campbell had just four hits in the big frame but was permitted five walks and an HBP in addition to the two errors. Campbell sent 15 men to the plate and ultimately left the bases loaded, but still led 18-3 by the end of the inning.

Drake Pierson had a big night at the plate, going 3-4 and scorng three times. Knipp, Weller, Harrill, and Halstead all chipped in two hits. Eleven different Camels scored a run on the night.

Campbell pitching matched a season high with 16 total strikeouts. O'Brien logged three and Jeremy Wiegman had two in addition to Boxrucker's 11.

Campbell and High Point return for the series finale tomorrow at 2 p.m. That game will be streamed on ESPN+.
