BUIES CREEK – No. 13 Campbell used a pair of runs in the seventh to beat Gardner-Webb 4-3 in Friday night's series opener at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels have now won 23 straight series openers, adding to the longest streak in the nation.
The Fighting Camels improve to 38-10, 20-2 on the year, while GWU dropped its eighth in a row and falls to 21-21, 12-10. A crowd of 1,232 was in attendance, the sixth largest crowd in Jim Perry Stadium history, and the fourth one this season to crack the top 10.
Campbell got two in the second on back-to-back RBI singles from
Grant Knipp and
Chandler Riley. The Camels had a chance for more with the bases loaded and one out, but an inning-ending 4-6-3 squashed the rally.
Hunter Loyd cruised through the first five innings and retired seven in a row from the second through fourth. The righty ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing two to cross before handing it off to
Ty Cummings. Cummings allowed the inherited runner to score but nothing else, as Campbell trailed 3-2 after six.
Campbell chased GWU starter Bobby Alcock with one out in the seventh and quickly cashed in against the bullpen.
Bryce Arnold's two-out, two-strike single tied things up and set up
Tyler Halstead's go-ahead double on the next pitch put the Camels up 4-3.
It was all
Cade Boxrucker from there, working scoreless eighth and ninth innings surrendering nothing more than a HBP in the eighth before retiring the side in order in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
The pitching staff did not issue a walk for just the second time all season while striking out eight. Cummings earned the win for his two innings of relief.
Chandler Riley was a catalyst at the plate for Campbell, responsible for three of CU's seven hits on the night and reached four times with a walk. He also scored and drove in a run. Arnold reached three times, walking twice in addition to his game-tying single.
The Camels and Runnin' Bulldogs return for game two tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
Chance Daquila is expected to take the mound for the Camels.
