No. 13 Campbell shuts out GWU to take series

BUIES CREEK – The pitching staff tossed its second shutout of the season to help No. 13 Campbell to a 7-0 win and take the series over Gardner-Webb. The Fighting Camels have now won eight in a row to mark the longest win streak of the season.

Campbell improves to 39-10, 21-2 with the win, while Gardner-Webb drops to 27-22, 12-11.

The only prior shutout of the season came in just the second game, shutting out Rutgers 10-0 on Feb. 18. After not walking a batter last night, Campbell issued only one walk tonight for the fewest in a two-game stretch since walking just one over two games at UNC Asheville in March 2019.

There was very little offense for either side through the early stages of the game, with just one runner reaching second base in the first five innings.

Chance Daquila turned in another strong start and stretched his scoreless streak to 10.2 innings, this time working into the sixth without a run. He departed with a runner on third, who was stranded there by Aaron Rund to close the starters scoreless line.

Daquila finished 5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

After being held to just one hit through the first five innings, the Campbell offense broke through with two runs in the sixth. Chandler Riley led off with his second hit of the day before a a walk and single loaded the bases for Drake Pierson. Pierson battled through an eight-pitch at-bat before driving a single to left to plate a pair and put the Camels up 2-0.

Gardner-Webb turned to the bullpen in the seventh, and was quickly greeted by Lawson Harrill, who drove the first pitch he saw to left field for a solo shot. Campbell added three more in the seventh and hit for the cycle in the inning. Bryce Arnold singled, Riley added a double and Jarrod Belbin tripled in the frame to help the Camels go ahead 6-0.

Harrill capped the evening with his second homer of the ballgame and his team-leading 18th of the year. Harrill now has two multi-home run games this week after going deep twice against UNCW Tuesday night.

All of that was plenty for Rund (4-1) to go on and earn the win, facing the minimum over the final 3.1. His only baserunner was a walk that was erased on a caught stealing.

Even allowing five hits, Daquila and Rund combined to face only three batters over the minimum thanks to a double play and Knipp throwing out a pair on the bases.

The Camels will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Cameron O'Brien is expected to get the start. Senior Day festivities will begin at 1:35 p.m. to honor 13 seniors.
