ASHEVILLE, N.C. – No. 13 Campbell secured the series win at UNC Asheville with a 10-2 win Saturday afternoon.
Chance Daquila pitched five shutout innings and Campbell never trailed in the contest.
The Fighting Camels improve to 35-10, 18-2 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 21-22, 7-13 in the Big South.
The first three batters of the game reached for Campbell, but the Camels settled for just one run on a
Tyler Halstead sac fly before a double play ended the threat.
The Camels got those runs later in the third, with a pair of walks and ground rule doubles from both
Payton Howard and
Bryce Arnold helping propel a four-run third to put the Camels up 5-0.
Two more doubles from Arnold and Halstead helped score two more in the seventh, and
Grant Knipp stayed hot in the eighth with a two-run home run to put the Camels up 10-1. The blast was his second HR and fourth extra-base hit of the weekend.
The run support was more than enough for
Chance Daquila, who was making his first start since April 15, tossing five shutout innings. He struck out just two, but threw 45 of his 63 pitches for strikes and did not surrender a walk. The righty finished with a final line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Daquila earned his team-leading eighth win of the season.
Three bullpen arms combined to go the rest of the way, with
Ernie Day pitching two innings, and
Brendan Wright and
Wiley Hartley each working one.
Bryce Arnold and
Tyler Halstead each drove in three runs on the day, while Howard, Arnold, Knipp, and Riley all logged multi-hit days. Howard also scored three times out of the leadoff spot.
Campbell was not hit by a pitch Saturday, snapping a streak of 14 straight games with at least one. The nation's leaders in the category were hit by 49 pitches over that 14 game stretch dating back to April 10.
The Camels and Bulldogs return for the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. That game will be streamed on ESPN+.
