ASHEVILLE, N.C. – No. 13 Campbell completed the series sweep of UNC Asheville with an 11-7 win Sunday afternoon. The win caps a 5-0 week for the Fighting Camels that previously featured wins at North Carolina and against Elon, and was the sixth series sweep of the year for the Fighting Camels.
Campbell improves to 36-10, 19-2 on the year, while UNCA falls to 21-23, 7-14. The win is Campbell's fifth in a row, and the fourth time this season the Camels have put together a win streak of at least five games.
Four home runs powered the win, two from
Drake Pierson in his first multi-home run game since March 19, and one from both
Lawson Harrill and
Grant Knipp.
The Camels struck first on an RBI single by
Chandler Riley in the second to go up 1-0. UNC Asheville answered in a big way with a five-run third inning to chase Campbell starter
Cameron O'Brien early.
Campbell immediately began chipping away, starting with
Drake Pierson's 13
th home run of the year, putting it off the scoreboard in left to cut the deficit in half and make it 5-3.
Chandler Riley scored to make it a one-run game in the fifth. Pierson's second home run of the day tied things up in the fifth and set up a
Grant Knipp go-ahead single later in the frame.
Lawson Harrill added two big insurance runs in the seventh with a two-run shot, his 14
th of the season.
The insurance runs were needed right away with the Bulldogs hitting a two-run blast of their own to cut the deficit back to one run at 8-7.
Campbell added a little more insurance with a three-run ninth, capped by a
Grant Knipp two-run home run. Knipp homered in all three games of the weekend and drove in nine total runs across the three-game series.
Aaron Rund turned in a big-time relief effort, being called on in the third and working into the eighth inning. The redshirt-senior matched his career-high with eight strikeouts across 5.1 innings and allowed only two runs.
Cade Boxrucker worked the final 1.1 without surrendering a baserunner.
Lawson Harrill had three hits on the day to lead six Camels with multiple. Both Pierson and Knipp drove in three runs.
The Fighting Camels return to Buies Creek for the final homestand of the season this week, hosting UNCW Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Gardner-Webb on the weekend. All four games will be streamed on ESPN+.
