BUIES CREEK – No. 13 Campbell's bats were hot all night in a 24-5 win to sweep the season series over future CAA foe UNCW. The win is Campbell's fourth straight over the Seahawks, having swept the midweek series each of the last two seasons.
The win is Campbell's sixth in a row, now moving to 37-10, while UNCW falls to 27-18. The 24 runs scored tonight are the most Campbell has ever scored against UNCW in 102 all-time meetings between the programs.
During this current six-game win streak, Campbell is batting .362 as a team with 40 extra-base hits. The offense is averaging 12 runs per game, while the pitching has given up just 4.8 per game.
Campbell started out with a bang thanks to
Jarrod Belbin's leadoff home run, launching his 15
th of the season over the scoreboard that traveled 461 feet. The Camels were just getting started as
Lawson Harrill and
Grant Knipp each went deep as well as part of a seven-run first inning.
All three first-inning home runs were crushed, totaling to 1,301 feet of home run in just the first inning.
Grant Knipp has now homered in four consecutive games, the longest HR streak by any Camel this season.
Campbell kept the offense rolling all night, scoring in each of the first six innings, and in seven of the eight home halves. Harrill homered for the second time on the night and his team-leading 16
th of the season with a solo-shot to straightaway center in the third inning.
Already leading 11-3, the Camels really broke the game open with a five-run fifth to go up 16-3. It wasn't loud offense this time, using an error, single, walk, HBP, and wild pitch to bring in runs. Four more crossed in similar fashion in the sixth, using a single, walk, sac fly, and wild pitch to help Campbell reach the 20-run mark by the end of the frame.
Campbell added four more in the eighth, with the scoring capped by a two-run single from
Chandler Riley.
Eleven different Camels notched a hit, 13 reached base, and 11 also recorded an RBI.
Tyler Halstead and
Chandler Riley had three hits each, with
Lawson Harrill driving in five.
Max Weller scored a team-high four times, leading seven players that scored more than once.
In addition to Campbell's 17 hits, UNCW issued 10 total walks with five of those coming on just four pitches. Three Campbell batters were also hit by a pitch.
While the offense was doing its thing,
Jake Murray and the pitching staff turned in another solid night. Murray (4-0) earned the win for tossing 5.0 IP, allowing three runs. Garrett Kangas,
Ernie Day, and
Wiley Hartley finished the job, allowing two runs, just one earned.
The Fighting Camels now look ahead to the final home series of the year against Gardner-Webb. First pitch Friday and Saturday night is set for 6 p.m., ahead of a 2 p.m. start on Senior Day on Sunday.
