BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer scored three first-half goals in a 3-3 draw against Northeastern in their CAA home opener Thursday evening at Eakes Athletics Complex.
The Fighting Camels now sit at 2-3-3 (0-1-2 CAA), and the Huskies are now 3-2-3 and 1-0-2 in conference play.
CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Vivian Akyirem opened the scoring in the match. She notched a shot into the upper-right corner from outside the box early in the 13th minute.
Campbell followed that with three unanswered goals in the first half from three different goal scorers. Sage Dougherty responded in the 16th minute with a goal of her own, as she and Reagan Baiotto paired up for a smooth give-and-go inside the box.
The Camels took the lead, 2-1, off a set-piece goal from Laney Peabody. The center back was up for a corner kick and headed it home off the assist by Cazzi Norgren. Campbell added to their advantage in the 34th minute when Kaleigh Backlund found herself on the end of a cross from Olivia Neal.
The three goals are the most the Camels have scored in a match so far this season. The attack was also efficient, as the team scored three goals on five shots on target during the match.
The Huskies brought one back just four minutes into the second half by way of Lauren Ahles.
Northeastern found their equalizer in the 74th minute. Alexis Legowski was pushed in the box and drew the penalty call from the referee. Jessie Hunt took the shot and found the back of the net in the upper-right corner.
Campbell played the final 4+ minutes down a player after Peabody received her second yellow card of the match.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Jeff Gross
On the offensive output this match:
"We talked to our team about how one way to make your presence known is to have the ball and be confident with it. They knew that coming out of last weekend. We trained one time this week, and I could tell they wanted to get that right. And they did tonight. It was really good. When the game was in question in the second half, this group put their foot down and said, 'we're going to play the game.' I thought we outplayed them for a while. This was two really good teams going at it."
On preparing for Towson:
"It's not about getting ready for any specific opponent; it's just continuing to focus on our process and how we want to go about progressing. What I've talked to them about is staying focused on improving, and I thought today was a very good step in that direction. We now have to see if we can back it up."
