BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off a seventh-straight conference title and 11th-consecutive NCAA postseason trip, Campbell opens its women's golf fall 2023 schedule with the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.
The 54-hole event begins Sunday and runs through Tuesday on the par-71 Mike Strantz design, which is familiar territory for Fighting Camel Golf. Since 2012, the Camels have won six team titles (2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022) and finished as runner-up twice at Caledonia.
"I'm excited about where we are," said head coach
John Crooks, who is entering his 33rd season with the Campbell women. "Our senior captain,
Sanna Lundmark, led us in qualifying, while a healthy
Izabella Grimbrandt finished second. Two outstanding freshmen,
Alicia Olsson and
Mira Berglund, followed, while in fifth place was
Isabella Hahne, the conference freshman of the year who led us in stroke average. We're ready to go.
Last year, with returnees
Izabella Grimbrandt,
Isabella Hahne and
Sanna Lundmark all finishing among the top 15 individuals, the Camels set school 36- (556) and 54-hole (834) records to claim a 16-stroke win over runner-up UNCW.
The Camel lineup for the Golfweek Fall Challenge also includes senior
Sanna Lundmark, red-shirt sophomore
Izabella Grimbrandt, sophomore
Isabella Hahne and freshmen
Alicia Olsson and
Mira Berglund. For the first time in Crooks' tenure with either the Campbell men or women, all five players in a tournament lineup hail from the same foreign country (Sweden).
The Golfweek Fall Challenge is the first event in Campbell's inaugural season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA).
Golfweek Fall Challenge
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club / Pawley's Island, S.C.
Par 71, 6526 Yards / Sept. 10-12, 2023
Live Scoring: Golfstat.com
Format: 54 holes (18-18-18). Double tee times Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
The Field: UAB, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Central Arkansas, Delaware, East Carolina, Eastern Washington, East Tennessee State, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, Morehead State, New Mexico State, UNCW, Richmond, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M Commerce, Winthrop.
The Course – Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71, 6526 yards): Caledonia was ranked No.-27 in in Golf Magazine's 2014 "Top 100 You Can Play" and is annually ranked on "America's 100 Greatest Public courses" list by Golf Digest. The 6,526-yard Mike Strantz design has been described as having "18 signature holes," with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation's old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse.
"Caledonia is a very intriguing golf course," said Crooks. "It gives you a lot of different looks, makes you hit a lot of different clubs. One hole is might be a water hazard, one there might be a tree in the fairway, the next might have a bunker guarding the green you have to be careful with.
The Coach: Now in his 34th year in charge of the Campbell men's golf program and 33rd as head coach of the CU women,
John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure. His teams have combined to earn 35 NCAA post-season trips, including 11 in a row for the women. His teams have won 160 tournaments and with 99 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (141) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women's coaches. He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women's side and eight in men's competition.
