BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels led for the first 36 minutes but ultimately fell late 68-62 to Delaware in Campbell's first CAA home game Thursday night in Gore Arena.
Campbell falls to 7-9, 1-2 while Delaware improves to 10-6, 2-1.
The Blue Hens tied the game for the first time at 54-54 with 4:29 to go, but didn't take a lead until 1:40 to play on a second-chance three. That kickstarted the 9-0 Delaware run to close the game.
Campbell started the opposite of how it closed, bolting out to an early 14-0 less than three minutes into the game. The Blue Hens coughed it up four times and Campbell converted on each of its first Delaware then started its slow climb back and cut the lead to just one before the end of the first half.
The second half began in similar fashion with the Camels scoring the first eight points to rebuild an 11 point lead. Then began another climb back from Delaware to close the gap and eventually overtake the Camels late. Campbell seemed up for the task of holding them off, using back-to-back threes from Sinani and Walsh, and a layup from Mokseckas to go shot-for-shot with Delaware. However, Mokesckas' layup with 2:33 to go turned out to be Campbell's last point before Delaware closed it out with a 68-62 win.
Jasin Sinani led the way with 16 points and a career-high 9 rebounds.
Elijah Walsh added 15 with Dell'Orso and Vaistaras with 13 and 12, respectively. The Camels didn't receive much production from the bench tonight, with
Tasos Cook providing the only two points off the bench.
Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all scorers with 20 for Delaware. Jyare Davis just missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds, along with six assists.
CU hauled in nine offensive rebounds but struggled to convert, ending with just four second-chance points to Delaware's 15. The biggest Campbell advantage on the night was 19 points off 14 Delaware turnovers.
Campbell returns to action Saturday against Hofstra at 2 p.m. That game will be broadcast on FloHoops.
