Camels down defending CAA champ Hofstra

BUIES CREEK – Campbell took down the defending CAA regular season champions with a 69-68 win Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena. Anthony Dell'Orso poured in 29 points and Laurynas Vaistaras added 20 on a perfect 7-7 shooting night.

The win improves Campbell to 8-9, 2-2 while Hofstra drops to 8-9, 1-3.

Vaistaras got things going with a three-pointer to open the scoring and was just getting started. The senior went 4-4 from beyond the arc in the first half and led all scorers with 14 points at the break. His efforts, along with 9 points and 7 boards from Dell'Orso helped Campbell lead by as many as 15 in the first half, and up seven going into the locker rooms.

Hofstra came out hot as Campbell struggled to knock down open shots early in the second half and needed less than four minutes to make it a one-point game. A layup from the CAA's leading scorer Tyler Thomas put the Pride up by five with 3:58 to go, but that turned out to be the final points of the game for Hofstra.

Dell'Orso scooped in a layup with 54 seconds to go to put the Camels back in front 69-68. Thomas then had three more looks at a go-ahead bucket for Hofstra over two possessions but couldn't connect. Dell'Orso had a rare FT miss to give the Pride the final possession still down one. A Jaquan Carlos fall-away jumper from the left wing drew only iron as time expired and gave Campbell the win.

Dell'Orso tallied his fourth double-double of the season with his most points ever in a double-double (29) and a career-high in rebounds (13). The sophomore was at his best down the stretch, scoring Campbell's last eight points, all eight coming in the paint.

Vaistaras and Dell'Orso are the first Campbell teammates to each have 20 in the same game this season, and the first since Dell'Orso (20) and Jay Pal (23) did so in the Big South tournament last season against Longwood.

Hofstra had a pair of 20-point scorers as well, led by Tyler Thomas (23) and Darlinstone Dubar's 21-point, 14-rebound double-double. Aside from the four total players with 20-point games, no other player finished in double figures on the day.

The Camels next action comes on the road at William & Mary on Thursday night at 7 p.m. That game will be streamed on FloHoops.
