Camels drop 1-0 contest to Monmouth

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer was unable to get over the hump once again, falling 1-0 to Monmouth Thursday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

The Camels, who have now lost four straight one-goal matches, sit at 4-7-3 and 2-4 in CAA play. The Hawks improved to 8-1-5 (4-0-2 CAA), now unbeaten in their last six contests.

The winning goal was provided by Ashley Lavrich in the 77th minute. Liza Suydam sent in a corner kick to the top of the box and preseason CAA Player of the Year Lauren Bruno, who lofted the ball in front of the goal. Lavrich rose highest to meet the header and sent it into the back of the net.

The match started out as a defensive battle, with neither team collecting a shot until the 20th minute. Each team had an even 50 percent of possession time in the first half.

The Hawks put two shots on goal in the opening frame, but each one was a comfortable save for JLo Varada.

Monmouth controlled much of the flow of play in the second half, specifically in their attacking third. They sent away 10 shots and created five corner kicks in the final 45 minutes, and the pressure finally broke through in the 77th minute with Lavrich's fifth goal of the season.

Cassie Coster recorded her seventh shutout of the season between the pipes for Monmouth, and her defense helped by allowing zero shots on goal from the Camels.
