Campbell back in win column with 2-0 victory against William & Mary

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels fought their way back into the win column with a 2-0 victory over William & Mary Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletics Complex, as Kaleigh Backlund scored once again to put herself in the history books.

The win provided a crucial three points for Campbell (5-7-3, 3-4) in the CAA Tournament race, and the Tribe (7-8, 2-5) dropped their fifth consecutive match.

The Camels broke through in the 18th minute, when Abygaelle Normand sent a cross in to the box. The ball found itself at the feet of Tribe goalkeeper Morgan Wood, who was unable to gain full control as the ball dribbled away. Backlund was right on top of the action to calmly slot the loose ball into the net.

The goal was Backlund's 22nd of her career at Campbell, which puts her 10th in the all-time goal scoring list at Campbell. It's also her eighth of the season to lead the team.

The Camels extended their lead in the 58th minute. William & Mary turned the ball over on a throw in in their own half, and Tyler Baughan carried the ball forward before sending in a through ball for Adele Schwab. Schwab took a first-time sliding touch, sending it past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net.

Campbell's defense held strong for the final 20 minutes of action, conceding only four shots on goal all game. Sierra Vance had the start in goal for the Camels, and she avoided any tough pressure for much of the match.

Ivey Crain and Nicole Sellers of the Tribe each received yellow cards in the final 10 minutes.
