Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Camels defeat CAA-leading Elon, 1-0

ELON, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer became the first visiting team to leave Elon with a victory, defeating the Phoenix 1-0 Thursday night at Rudd Field.

The Fighting Camels improved to 6-8-3 (4-5 CAA), while the Phoenix now sits at 11-3-1 (6-3 CAA) after losing their first home game of the season. The loss also knocked Elon from first to third in the CAA standings.

With only one match remaining in the regular season, the Camels are still in the hunt for one of the final two spots in the CAA Tournament.

The Camels broke the deadlock in the 37th minute on a counter-attack goal from Tyler Baughan. Emely Rubio cleared the ball from near midfield towards the Elon goalkeeper, and Baughan gave chase.

The keeper came out to clear it, but the pressure from Baughan caused a poor clearance. Alyssa Tucker was there to meet it, and she sent it back towards Baughan in the box. Baughan fired it first-touch from the right side into the upper-left corner of the net.

The effort would end up being one of only two shots on goal for the Camels, who took advantage of one of their few opportunities.

Elon out-shot the Camels by an 18-5 margin and the team recorded four shots on goal, but JLo Varada was up to the task each time. The Campbell defense also forced the Phoenix into six offsides violations.

Highlighting the defensive effort was Abygaelle Normand, Meghan Bernetti and Riley Terrill, as all three of them played the full 90 minutes along the back line in support of Varada.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Jeff Gross

"This team has progressed rapidly in a short time with many new faces working together. We've dropped some results that taught us hard lessons. Those lessons paid off tonight. There was grit, there was quality and there was a collective spirit. They are proud of themselves and I am proud of them. Roll Humps!"
