Camels fall in five sets to Hofstra

BUIES CREEK - Gwen Wolkow turned in a career day, but it wasn't enough as the Camels fell to Hofstra in five sets. Wolkow posted a career-high 23 kills and 10 digs in the match.

The loss drops Campbell to 2-13, 0-5 in the CAA. Hofstra improves to 8-6, 4-1 on the year.

Campbell took its first lead in CAA play yet this season with a 25-22 first set. Hofstra led by four in the early going, but after Campbell drew even at 13, neither team led by more than a single point again until Campbell closed with a 4-0 run. Gwen Wolkow got off to a hot start with six kills in the opening frame.

The second set was neck-and-neck again, this time with Hofstra coming out on top 25-23. Campbell had some self-inflicted wounds in the second with 10 attack errors and a pair of service errors to hinder the effort.

The Camels regained the lead with another 25-22 win in the third set. Similar to the first set, neither team ever built much of a lead, with Campbell's largest being four points. Campbell hit .367 as a team in the frame, its best mark of the day.

Hofstra evened the score with a 25-21 fourth set. It looked like it would be lopsided, with the Pride leading 20-10, but the Camels stormed back and cut the deficit to just two points at 22-20, but couldn't complete the comeback.

A 6-0 run in the middle of the final set proved to be the difference for Hofstra, going up 11-6 en route to a 15-9 win to take the match.

Wolkow's 23 kills are the most by a Camel since Sarah Colla put up 28 against Winthrop on Nov. 2, 2019.

Both setters, Maddie Converse and Victoria Tupy, logged double-doubles on the afternoon.

The Camels and Pride return to action tomorrow at noon to finish up the series.
