Camels lose late to Saint Francis

BUIES CREEK - Valentnio Pinedo's free throw with 1.9 seconds left lifted Saint Francis over Campbell 65-64 Sunday afternoon in Gore Arena. The Camels led by 11 at the half, but shot 0-14 from beyond the arc in the second half in the defeat.

The loss drops Campbell to 1-2, while Saint Francis picks up its first win to reach 1-2.

The Camels got off to a hot start, hitting five of their first nine three-point attempts and were sitting at 50% at halftime. Campbell led 42-31 at the break thanks to Jasin Sinani's 16 first-half points.

Saint Francis opened the second half with a quick run to erase the 11-point different and tie the game in less than four minutes. Campbell weathered the storm and pushed the lead back to six, but the Red Flash again had an answer and took their first lead of the second half with 5:16 to play.

From there it went back and forth down the stretch in a game with eight ties and five lead changes. Campbell's final possession featured a pair of misses to give SFU the ball back with 26 seconds left. Pinedo drew a shooting foul with 1.9 to play and hit the second of two free throws to snag the win.

Sinani led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Cam Gregory scored 10 points against his former team, and Nolan Dorsey had an active night with eight points, seven rebounds, one assist and two steals.

After turning the ball over just nine times at Virginia the Camels struggled to hold possession and committed 18 turnovers leading to 22 points for the visitors.

The Camels return to action at home Wednesday night against Newberry (DII) at 7 p.m. on FloCollege.
