Camels open season with 96-49 win

BUIES CREEK - The Fighting Camels opened the 2024-25 season with a 96-49 win over Pfeiffer Monday night in Gore Arena. The win was Campbell's seventh straight season-opening win, and 19th straight win in the home opener.

Campbell reached 96 points on just three made three-pointers, with all three falling in the second half. The Camels did the bulk of their damage inside, scoring 56 points in the paint and tallying an assist on 50% of their buckets. Campbell lived at the line as well, going 29-36 at the stripe. Campbell's 29 made free throws are their most since hitting 31 against Winthrop on Jan. 6, 2018.

Bragi Gudmundsson led the Camels in scoring with a perfect shooting night, going 3-3 from the floor, including 1-1 from three, and 8-8 at the foul line. Both Terren Frank and Eric Van Der Heijden joined him in double figures with 10 each, while five other Camels added eight points in a balanced scoring effort.

The first bucket of the season was scored on a breakaway dunk from Van Der Heijden, one of Campbell's seven dunks on the night. Campbell led by as many as 21 in the first half and took a 44-24 lead into the break. 

The offense was even better in the second half, shooting 62.5% to score 52 points after halftime. Colby Duggan and Terren Frank led the way in the second, each scoring eight points. Campbell's largest lead was the final margin of 47 in the 96-49 win.

Campbell forced 23 turnovers on the night and outscored Pfeiffer 26-2 off turnovers and 22-1 on the fast break. 

The Camels now await an ACC road test at Virginia on Wednesday night, the Cavaliers' season opener in Charlottesville. Tip-off is set for  7 p.m. on ACCNX.
