BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Four Camels scored double-digit points as Campbell defeated Mount Olive 72-29 in the season opener for both teams Monday night at Gore Arena.
Campbell (1-0) jumped ahead 19-4 after the first quarter, held the Spartans (0-1)Â to no more than 11 points in a quarter and led by as many as 44.
The Camels outscored Mount Olive 26-4 in a third quarter capped off by a buzzer-beating heave from just beyond half court by Emerson Thompson.
Thompson, a freshman from Butner, N.C., finished tied for a game-high 14 points along with five rebounds, and four steals in her collegiate debut.Â
Olivia Tucker added 14 points and seven boards while Jasmine Felton finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five steals. Gianni Boone added 10 points for the Camels who held a 28-8 advantage in the paint and 19-5 on breaks.Â
Campbell forced 28 turnovers and converted those into 24 points while limiting the Trojans to shoot 17.0 percent (8-of-47) from the field and 2-of-9 from three.Â
Alondra Arroyo led Mount Olive with seven points and nine rebounds.Â
The Camels return to action Thursday in a 6:00 p.m. tip-off at Western Carolina.Â
