CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Kehinde Obasuyi scored 24 points, Avyonce Carter added 22 and Western Carolina held off Campbell 73-72 Thursday night at the Ramsey Center. Campbell falls to 1-1 overall while Western Carolina improves to 2-0 after a game that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
Four Camels scored double-figures led by a career-high 21 points from Gianni Boone and 15 points from Gemma Nunez.Â
Western Carolina led by as many as 11 in the first half and entered halftime up 41-34. Nunez and Hadleigh Dill combined for 15 of Campbell's 22 points in the third period to put the Camels back in front 56-52.Â
A 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter gave Campbell its largest lead of the night at 66-58 with 3:38 remaining. Western Carolina responded as Carter made back-to-back threes to start an 11-2 run for the Catamounts who went back ahead by one with 1:22 left.Â
Both sides traded free throws and the lead down the stretch as Grace Pack put the Catamounts up by one with a pair of free throws 10 seconds remaining. Jessica Woods had a look at the go-ahead basket as time expired but her mid-range jumper missed off the iron.Â
Courtney Dahlquist recorded her first career double-double behind 13 points and 13 rebounds while Dill finished with 12 points. Nunez added four rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks.
The Camels shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field, 3-of-17 from three and converted just 17-of-28 free throws. The Catamounts shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three and went 13-of-19 on free throws.
Campbell held a 46-30 edge in points in the paint but were outscored 15-5 on fast breaks. Both sides finished even with 39 rebounds and 12 turnovers each.Â
Campbell takes a week off before returning to action next Thursday against High Point in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Gore Arena.Â
