Camels lose at the buzzer at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, N.J. - Monmouth's Xander Rice banked home a pair of threes in the final five seconds including a buzzer beater from half court to shock the Camels in an 88-87 defeat for Campbell.
 
Campbell led by five at the 10-second mark, but went just 2-4 in the closing seconds at the foul line to make way for Rice to knock down the late threes. The loss drops Campbell to 12-14, 6-7. Monmouth improves to 14-12, 7-6.
 
The Camels had their backs against the wall themselves trailing by 11 with 5:34 to play before reeling off a 17-3 run to go ahead by five. Campbell went 12-13 at the stripe during the run and finally retook the lead on a Dell'Orso stepback with 59 seconds to play.
 
Anthony Dell'Orso finished with the biggest double-double of his career tonight with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Mokseckas added 15 while Walsh and Vaistaras each finished in double figures with 13 and 10.
 
Walsh also turned in the first double-double effort of his career adding a career-high 10 rebounds to go with his 13 points.
 
Campbell came out hot and shot 58% in the first half to help carry a 47-44 lead into the locker room. Dell'Orso had 14 on 6-11 shooting at the break to lead all scorers. Gediminas Mokseckas started hot and added 13 on 3-3 from beyond the arc in the first half.
 
Dell'Orso really got things going in the second and scored 17 thanks to going 7-8 at the foul line. Campbell reached the bonus early and lived at the line in the second half taking 23 second-half free throws. Rice was red-hot himself after halftime, scoring 24 of his game-high 37 after the break.
 
The Hawks took advantage of turnovers and the offensive glass to finish with 23 more shot attempts than the Camels on the evening. CU finished with 18 turnovers, their third most this season, leading to 23 points for the Hawks. The hosts also hauled in 16 offensive rebounds accounting for 21 second-chance points.
 
The Camels now return to action Saturday afternoon in at Drexel. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Philadelphia on FloHoops.
