Campbell defeats Ohio in series opener, 8-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Camels (4-1) took care of business behind 11 strikeouts from Derek Vartanian and defeated Ohio (2-2), 8-2 Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The night began with a one-hour weather delay, but that would not slow down the Camels, winners of their last four. Vartanian struck out two batters in each of the first two frames, and Grant Knipp laced a double to center field in the first to score Lawson Harrill.

The game broke open in the third, as Vartanian struck out another two in the top of the frame. With no outs and the bases loaded, Reed Stallman hit a towering shot to the warning track in right center, and the centerfielder was unable to make the grab. All runners scored as Stallman advanced to third.

Max Weller would bring across Stallman before the frame ended.

Vartanian struck out another two in the top of the fourth, before the Camels scored three more. Braeden O'Shaughnessy got on base thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman. Trenton Harris followed that up with a bunt single.

Dalen Thompson smashed a triple through the gap in left center field to score the two. Thompson then made it across on a wild pitch, which ended up being the final run for the Camels.

Vartanian would then strike out one in the fifth and two in the sixth to finish his night with 11 strikeouts, six hits and only one walk. He struck out all but one in the Bobcats' lineup.

Freshman Simon Bargo would come on to pitch the seventh and eighth innings. He struck out three before fellow freshman Nate Brittain came on in the ninth, who struck out the final batter after allowing two runs on an RBI single.

The Camels pitching staff ended the night with a season-high 16 strikeouts. It is the first time the team has struck out 15+ since High Point last year (4/22) It was that same game that saw a Camel strike out 10+, when Cade Boxrucker also fanned 11.

Harris and Thompson each led the team with two hits, and Harrill, Stallman, Knipp and O'Shaughnessy each drew two walks.
