BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Fighting Camels continued their winning streak, defeating the Ohio Bobcats in walk-off fashion, 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium. Braeden O'Shaughnessy recorded the hit, scoring Peyton Bonds.
Bonds got on base with a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, then stole second base. With two outs, O'Shaughnessy came to the plate and hit a slow grounder towards third. The third baseman made the throw to first, but O'Shaughnessy beat the throw. Bonds never slowed rounding third and beat the throw home from the first baseman.
Packy Bradley-Cooney stepped on the mound for the Camels in the ninth inning with the game tied at seven. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning and earned his first win of the season to go along with two saves.
The game began with a three-run home run from Grant Knipp in the first, his fifth of the season. He currently leads the team in home runs and RBI (13).
The Camels added another in the third, as Bonds singled to right field to score Knipp.
Ohio scored three in the fourth, but the Camels added another in the bottom half of the frame by way of a solo home run from Payton Howard.
The Bobcats scored two more in the sixth to tie it up when AJ Rausch hit his second home run of the day.
Howard gave the Camels the lead again in the sixth. He placed a bunt down the third base line and beat the throw. The throw was errant, and Howard advanced to second. Trenton Harris, who began the play on first base, was able to come all the way around because of the error.
Ohio would then take their first lead of the weekend with a two-run homer from Jackson Cauthron in the seventh inning.
O'Shaughnessy would make the game level once again in the bottom of the seventh. Chandler Riley hit a triple down the right field line, and O'Shaughnessy brought him home with a swinging sacrifice bunt.
Jeremy Wiegman held the Bobcats scoreless in the eighth inning after pitching the sixth and seventh innings.
The walk-off is the first for the Camels since Dalen Thompson recorded a single in the 10th inning against Butler last season (2/26).
The Camels now sit at 6-1, which ties the record from last year as Coach Justin Haire's best through seven games.
