Camels host UNCW, travel to Charleston

Campbell hosts UNCW Friday for its annual Play4Kay game

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell hosts UNCW in its annual Play4Kay game on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 PM. The Camels then hit the road to take on Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 PM. 

The first 125 to Friday night's Play4Kay game will receive a pink "Camels for a Cure" t-shirt while supplies last.

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past seven seasons. UConn is the next closest program to accomplish the feat, having done so in six of the past seven seasons
  • Campbell has held 42 opponents to 40 points or less and 102 opponents to 50 points or less in the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17)
  • This season Campbell ranks:
  • 8th nationally in scoring defense (53.8 points per game allowed)
  • 17th nationally in field goal percentage defense (35.8%)
  • 4th nationally in three-point percentage defense (24.1%)

LAST TIME OUT

  • Audrey Fuller scored a season-high 16 points and Campbell led wire-to-wire in a 53-35 victory over Elon last Sunday
  • Fuller scored 11 of the team's 24 first half points, starting off 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Gianni Boone added 10 points as the CU bench outscored the Phoenix 28-14. Christabel Ezumah added nine points, seven boards and three blocks while Svenia Nurenberg added five assists and tied her career-high with 11 boards
  • The Camels held Elon to five points in the fourth quarter, including none over the final two minutes. Campbell led by as many as 19 after Fuller scored on a jumper in the lane and converted a free throw.
  • Campbell made 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field and outscored the Phoenix 34-14 in the paint and 12-2 on second chance buckets. Elon shot 26.0 percent (13-of-50) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three and were out-rebounded 42-23

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • UNCW enters 4-16 overall and 2-7 in CAA games. The Seahawks picked up its second conference win in a 77-70 victory over Hampton last time out
  • Redshirt freshman guard Taylor Henderson leads the Seahawks averaging 14.0 points while Senior guard Evan Miller averages 12.0 points
  • UNCW is led by first year head coach Nicole Woods
  • Charleston heads into the weekend 14-6 overall and third in the CAA standings at 6-3 in conference games
  • The Cougars are coming off a 66-59 loss to Towson and host NC A&T on Friday night before facing Campbell on Sunday
  • CofC ranks 4th nationally with a 7.30 turnover margin, 10th forcing 21.55 turnovers per game and 16th with 42.6 rebounds per game
  • Freshman guard Taryn Barbot leads the CAA averaging 17.0 points while fifth-year guard Jenna Annecchiarico leads the CAA and ranks 6th nationally averaging 6.5 assists per game and 14th averaging 2.95 steals

  • Campbell meets UNCW for the 52nd time in program history. CU leads the all-time series 33-18

EZUMAH'S CAREER OUTINGS

  • Senior forward Christabel Ezumah has set new scoring career-highs twice to close out January
  • Ezumah went 10-for-17 from the field and finished with a career-high 28 points in a win over Stony Brook on Jan. 21
  • She previously scored a career-high 24 points as Campbell snapped a 5-game losing streak in a 69-59 win over Towson on Jan. 14
  • Over the past six  games, Ezumah is averaging 16.0 points on 63.3% shooting, 6.5 rebounds and 1.83 blocks

SCORE 60 AND WIN

  • Campbell is undefeated in games this year when it scores 60 points or more (9-0) and has scored over 60 in all but two wins this season

500 REBOUND CLUB

  • Both Christabel Ezumah and Shy Tuelle joined the 500 career rebound club on Jan. 19 at UNCW
  • Ezumah and Tuelle become the 24th and 25th Camels to achieve 500 boards and are the first to reach the mark since Taya Bolden (2016-22)

NUNEZ DROPPING DIMES

  • Sophomore point guard Gemma Nunez dealt a career-best seven assists at UNCW (1/19)
  • The Almeria, Spain native who leads the Camels averaging 31.8 minutes per game (including 34.9 minutes in conference games) ranks 9th in the CAA averaging 3.3 assists and has recorded 5+ assists in four games this season

SHARPSHOOTING SHY

  • The program leader for three-pointers made, Shy Tuelle has remained as one of the best shooters from behind the arc in the nation
  • Tuelle ranks 3rd in the CAA shooting 38.2 from behind the arc and 4th in the league with 47 threes made on the year, averaging 2.35 per game
  • The Hampton, Tenn. native has totaled 268 threes in her career and is one of 25 active Division-I players to have made 260 or more career three-pointers

EZUMAH EFFICIENCY

  • Ezumah is one of the most efficient forwards in the nation, ranking 12th amongst active Division-I players shooting 59.6 percent from the field for her career
  • This season, Ezumah is shooting 57.9 percent from the floor
  • Despite playing the fifth-most minutes per game (24.2) on the team, Ezumah leads Campbell averaging a near double-double behind 13.1 points per game and 8.3 rebounds

ADVANTAGE IN THE CREEK

  • Under head coach Ronny Fisher, Campbell has compiled a 98-32 (.759) record at home in Buies Creek including a 48-15 (.774) mark over the past four seasons
  • Over the past seven seasons, Campbell has held foes to 49.4 points per game and outscored its opponents by an average of 12.0 points when playing inside Gore Arena
  • Since the 2016-17 season, the Camels have held foes to 40 points or less 28 times at home
  • Campbell finished non-conference play this season with a perfect 4-0 record and are currently 6-2 in The Creek this season

BLOCKING MACHINE

  • Christabel Ezumah has recorded four or more blocks in four games this season and ranks 45th nationally and 3rd in the CAA averaging 1.80 blocks per game
  • She moved into 2nd on Campbell's all-time blocks list recording her 112th block against Northeastern on Jan. 28
  • Ezumah previously recorded her 100th block against ETSU on Dec. 17 and moved into third on the program's all-time block list after recording her 102nd block at Stony Brook on Jan. 5
  • Amanda Coffer (2013-16) owns the program record for career blocks at 163

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball
  • Over the previous seven seasons Campbell has won 135 games for an average of 19 wins per season
  • Before leaving the Big South for the CAA, Fisher was the longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season and led all active coaches in the league with 232 wins overall including 146 in Big South play before the 2023-24 season
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
  • Previously served as head coach at Presbyterian (2008-16)
