BUIES CREEK – Campbell cut a 20-point second-half deficit to just four, but couldn't make it all the way back in an 86-76 loss to Northeastern Thursday night at Gore Arena.
The loss drops Campbell to 11-13, 5-6 in the CAA while Northeastern improves to 9-15, 4-7.
Anthony Dell'Orso led the way for Campbell with 23 points on 8-14 shooting, 4-7 from distance.
Jasin Sinani tossed in 18 points on 4-8 from downtown.
Northeastern entered the game shooting 30% from distance, but didn't show it tonight as they exploded for 14-25 (56%) from beyond the arc. Luke Sakota paced that effort going 5-10 and a game-high 23 points, along with Jared Turner going 4-6 from deep.
Campbell jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead immediately evaporated into a 22-2 Northeastern run that left Campbell trailing 22-7 midway through the first. Campbell was plagued by turnovers throughout the first half, coughing it up 10 times leading to 14 points off turnovers for the Huskies. The Camels trailed by as many as 19 in the first half and by 13 at the break with a score of 42-29.
The Camels faced their largest deficit of the night at 20 points with 9:30 to play but found another gear and shaved it to only four points thanks to a quick 16-0 run in less than five minutes. The run included a big time dunk from
Mason Grant and back-to-back threes from Dell'Orso and Sinani.
Northeastern was steady at the foul line down the stretch to keep Campbell from pulling any closer as the Huskies pulled away once more for the 86-76 final.
Elijah Walsh had a solid night for Campbell with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Laurynas Vaistaras added to his team-high assist total with seven on the evening.
