Campbell set for CAA Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Campbell is set to compete in the 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Primis on Thursday at noon. The Fighting Camels earned the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 seed Elon.

Every game of the CAA Championship outside of the final will be broadcast on FloHoops. CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Campbell is seeking its third conference tournament title overall and first since winning the ASUN Championship in 1999-00
  • The Camels earned its only NCAA Tournament bid in 2000, falling to 2nd seed Duke in the first round, 71-42. Campbell also claimed the 1988-89 Big South tournament title, winning three games in three days after being seeded third
  • Campbell has finished as championship runners-up in three of the past four Big South tournaments (2019, 2021 and 2022)
  • CU's last earned a postseason tournament berth in the 2021-22 season, automatically qualifying for the WNIT after winning the Big South regular season title
  • Campbell is 8-6 in conference tournaments under Coach Fisher

NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE

  • Campbell is the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top-25 in scoring defense in each of the past seven seasons. UConn is the next closest program to accomplish the feat, having done so in six of the past seven seasons
  • Campbell has held 41 opponents to 40 points or less and 103 opponents to 50 points or less in the Ronny Fisher era (since 2016-17)
  • This season Campbell ranks:
  • 12th nationally and 2nd in the CAA in scoring defense (55.0 points per game allowed)
  • 36th nationally and 4th in the CAA in field goal percentage defense (37.2%)
  • 9th nationally and 3rd in the CAA in three-point percentage defense (26.0%)
  • Additionally, Campbell ranks 22nd nationally and 2nd in the CAA giving up only 13.7 fouls per game

LAST TIME OUT

  • Christabel Ezumah scored 16 points and pulled in a career-high 21 rebounds and Shy Tuelle set the program's single-season three point record as Campbell defeated Hampton 70-61 last Saturday
  • The Camels never trailed and led by as many as 18 against the Lady Pirates

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Elon is seeded 9th in the CAA Championship after finishing the regular season with a 11-20 record overall and a 7-11 mark in conference games
  • Junior forward and ECU transfer Iycez Adams leads the Phoenix averaging 10.1 points and 7.1 boards while CAA All-Freshman selection Maraja Pass averages 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds
  • Elon is led by veteran head coach Charlotte Smith in her 13th season in charge of the Phoenix

SERIES HISTORY

  • With main campuses separated by less than 90 miles, Campbell takes on Elon for the 31st time on Thursday and the second time ever on a neutral court
  • Campbell split the regular season series with the Phoenix, falling in the first matchup at home, 45-44 on Jan. 12 and winning in Elon, 53-35 on Feb. 4
  • Campbell leads the all-time series, 19-12

CAA POSTSEASON AWARDS

  • Christabel Ezumah received All-CAA Third Team and All-Defensive team honors
  • Shy Tuelle was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Tuelle is a three-time graduate from Campbell with bachelor degrees in accounting and sport management and has earned her MBA
  • It marks the fourth-straight season a Campbell WBB student-athlete has received conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors as Tuelle joins former teammates Lauren McNamara-Clement ('21) and Taya Bolden ('22) along with current teammate Brittany Staves ('23)
  • Brittany Staves received the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award

NOT SHY ABOUT SCORING

  • Shy Tuelle (1,406 career points) moved into 9th on Campbell's all-time scoring list on March 1 at Delaware. Tuelle is just two points away from passing Sharon Williams' (1979-83) total of 1,407 points for 8th on the all-time list
  • The program leader for three-pointers made with 297 in her career, Tuelle has remained as one of the best shooters from behind the arc in the nation
  • Her 76 threes this season set a new program single-season record. Tuelle officially set the mark in the final regular season game at Hampton
  • The sixth-year and Hampton, Tenn. native ranks 2nd in the CAA and 48th nationally shooting 38.8 percent from behind the arc, 2nd in the league and 37th nationally with 76 threes made on the year, and 23rd in the country averaging 2.62 treys per game
  • Tuelle leads all active CAA players in career threes and is one of 21 active Division-I players to have made 290 or more career three-pointers

EZUMAH'S REGULAR SEASON FINALE

  • Christabel Ezumah exploded for 16 points and a career-high 21 rebounds in Campbell's regular season finale at Hampton
  • Ezumah recorded her seventh double-double of the season in the second quarter, finishing the first half with 12 points and 16 boards. She made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and swatted away three shots in 28 minutes of action
  • Her 21 rebounds also marks the most for a Camel since Taya Bolden's 21 rebound effort at Winthrop in 2019

EXPERIENCED SQUAD

  • Shy Tuelle (2nd - 149 games played), Brittany Staves (3rd - 140 gp) and Svenia Nurenberg (T-7th - 119 gp) all rank in the top-10 in program history for games played
  • The trio of graduate players have combined for 115 wins, two Big South regular season crowns (2019-20 and 2021-22) and the program's first WNIT appearance (2022)

WIN MILESTONES FOR FISHER

  • Head coach Ronny Fisher won his 150th game at Campbell in Friday's 66-65 win over Delaware
  • Fisher is 151-89 in his eighth season at the helm of the Camels and is closing in on 250 wins for his career with a 248-233 record

500 BOARDS FOR BRITT & SVEN

  • Both Brittany Staves and Svenia Nurenberg became the 26th and 27th members of Campbell's 500 rebound club after reaching the total at Hampton last Saturday
  • Staves and Nurenberg are the 3rd and 4th Camels to hit the milestone this season after both Christabel Ezumah and Shy Tuelle accomplished it in February

SCORE 60 AND WIN

  • Campbell is undefeated in games this year when it scores 60 points or more (13-0) and has scored over 60 in all but three wins this season

NUNEZ DROPPING DIMES

  • Sophomore guard Gemma Nunez leads the team averaging 3.4 assists which ranks 8th in the CAA
  • Nunez, who has recorded 5 or more assists in six games this season, holds a 1.27 assist/turnover ratio which ranks 10th in the CAA

EZUMAH EFFICIENCY

  • Ezumah is one of the most efficient forwards in the nation shooting 56.1 percent from the field this season
  • Ezumah leads all active CAA players and ranks 21st amongst active Division-I players shooting 58.5 percent from the field for her career
  • Despite playing the fifth-most minutes per game (24.5) on the team, Ezumah leads Campbell averaging a near double-double behind 12.2 points per game and a CAA best 8.1 rebounds

BLOCKING MACHINE

  • Christabel Ezumah (48 blocks this season, 127 career blocks) has recorded four or more blocks in four games this season and ranks 52nd nationally and 3rd in the CAA averaging 1.66 blocks per game
  • She moved into 2nd on Campbell's all-time blocks list recording her 112th block against Northeastern on Jan. 28
  • Ezumah previously recorded her 100th block against ETSU on Dec. 17 and moved into third on the program's all-time block list after recording her 102nd block at Stony Brook on Jan. 5
  • Amanda Coffer (2013-16) owns the program record for career blocks at 163

HEAD COACH RONNY FISHER

  • A three-time Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of Campbell women's basketball
  • Over the previous seven seasons Campbell has won 135 games for an average of 19 wins per season
  • Before leaving the Big South for the CAA, Fisher was the longest-tenured Big South coach in his 15th season and led all active coaches in the league with 232 wins overall including 146 in Big South play before the 2023-24 season
  • Under Fisher, the Camels claimed the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Big South regular season titles and finished as Big South tournament runners-up in 2019, 2021 and 2022
  • Fisher has also led Campbell to its first-ever WNIT berth in 2021-22 along with two other postseason appearances in the WBI. He helped the Camels claim their first ever postseason win in the 2019 WBI
  • Previously served as head coach at Presbyterian (2008-16)
