BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to spur a seven-inning win against Valparaiso, 18-7, Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Camels (19-4) are winners of seven-straight, and they scored 10 or more runs in six of those contests. The only game they failed to reach double digits was a 9-8 victory over Bucknell.
Valpo (7-10) scored the first run with a solo home run in the top of the first from Kyle Schmack.
Campbell responded with their second consecutive six-run first inning. Lawson Harrill started it off with a two-RBI double. Reed Stallman hit a three-run home run to the opposite field, and Grant Knipp hit a sacrifice fly to score Charlie Meglio.
Knipp had another strong day at the plate, going 3-3 with two walks and four RBI. Harrill joined him by going 3-3 with one walk and two RBI.
Meglio hit a sac fly in the second to score Harrill and extend the Campbell lead to 7-1.
The Beacons did not go away early, scoring five runs in the top of the third. The first run was walked in with the bases loaded, then a sac fly from Connor Giusti scored another. Kevin Denty, Carson Husmann and Alex Ryan then hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to bring the inning tally to five.
Jackson Roberts came to the mound with one out in the frame after the Beacons had scored four runs. After the first batter recorded a single, Roberts struck out the next batter and forced a fly out to end the inning.
Roberts would go on to pitch three more innings, allowing only one more run. He finished with five strikeouts and only two hits in the winning effort (4-1).
Knipp came to the plate in the bottom of the third and hit his 14th home run of the year. Knipp now leads all of Division I in home runs, breaking a tie with Georgia's Charlie Condon.
Through 19 games, Knipp is hitting .484 with a 1.266 slugging percentage and a .620 on-base percentage. He has almost exceeded his strikeout total (17) with his home run total.
Valpo added another of their own in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Liam Patton to make the score 8-7 in favor of the Camels.
The Camels broke it open in the bottom of the fifth with 10 runs. Andrew Schuldt hit his first of two three-run homers to start off the scoring. Knipp then hit a two-RBI single for his third and fourth RBI on the day.
Payton Howard hit a fielder's choice to the second baseman, who made an error on the throw. Chandler Riley scored on the play, and Knipp was safe at second base. Dylan Koontz followed that up with a sac fly to right field to score Knipp.
Schuldt came back to the plate and hit his second homer in the inning, another three-run shot to score Harrill and Howard. He's the first Camel to have two homers in the same inning since Connor Denning did so against Presbyterian on March 27, 2022.
After both teams were scoreless in the sixth, Nate Brittain came on to pitch the seventh for the Camels. He put down the Beacons in order with two strikeouts and a lineout to right field.
