Dalen Thompson’s seven RBI power Campbell past Charleston Southern

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Junior outfielder Dalen Thompson knocked in seven runs to help lead Campbell over Charleston Southern, 15-2, Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Thompson got going in the bottom of the first inning with Campbell's second grand slam of the year. Dylan Koontz followed that immediately with a solo shot to right field.

The Camels (16-4) have scored five or more in the past three first innings, creating a trend of hot starts.

Charleston Southern (10-11) was unable to match Campbell's hot start. The Buccaneers only had one baserunner in the first three innings.

Much of that was due to starting pitcher Cole Peschl, who went five innings. Peschl allowed only two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter tonight to earn his first win of the season.

The scoring continued in the third inning for the Camels, when Payton Howard singled to bring in Charlie Meglio. Thompson came up to bat again with the bases loaded and laced a two-RBI single to center field.

After Campbell pushed another across in the fourth, Grant Knipp came to the plate and hit his nation-leading 15th homer of the season. This one was a two-run shot to left that went 391 feet, scoring Reed Stallman.

The Bucs scored their two runs in the fifth inning by way of a two-RBI double from BJ Banyon.

The Fighting Camels answered with four of their own in the bottom of the frame. Thompson's seventh RBI was a solo home run that travelled 422 feet to left center field. Stallman, Meglio and Braeden O'Shaughnessy followed that with three consecutive RBI hits (two singles and a sac fly) to bring in three more runs.

Will Palmer came in to pitch the sixth inning for the Camels. He allowed two hits and a walk, but he struck out the side to leave the bases loaded.

In his first appearance of the season, Garret Kangas pitched the seventh inning. He allowed no hits, recording a strikeout, groundout and flyout to end the game with the 10-run rule.
